Chronicle-2019

41 Academic Review DRAMATIC ARTS The Open Stage evening is popular with the boys - having a hands-on opportunity to produce, direct or act in a performance. Many Grade 10 and 11 boys performed amazing pieces, both group and individual. These ranged from dramatic classical and contemporary items to musical theatre. Accolades go to Loyiso Mabude, Sihle Manonyane, Thando Myeza (pictured below) and William Young, for receiving Drama Honours. Congratulations to Cade Brooks, Zukile Habile, Lefa Motshele, Malusi Mngomane, and Amnene Mthiyane for receiving Colours for Drama. 2019 afforded the boys exciting opportunities to experience drama. This began with a dance workshop by the Flatfoot Dance Company in term one. We then went on the USA Drama Tour in the Easter holidays. The Hilton Festival was a treat in the third term. We look forward to 2020 with passion and enthusiasm. With our full complement of dynamic and vibrant staff we are set to keep it relevant, contemporary, fresh and innovative. Ms Ulae tha Singh HOD Dramatic Arts The Dramatic Arts department strives for excellence in all spheres: academic, cultural and personal. We believe strongly that school is a dress-rehearsal for adulthood. We therefore acknowledge and practice, in our teaching and learning, the embracing of human values and inculcation of a deep sense of humanity, having a spiritual or belief system that serves as a moral compass and ensuring that every boy counts as he wrestles with his own sense of identity/values. We believe that this is as important as academic excellence or success. We welcomed Ms Lethu Langa as a full-time teacher and Mr Jonathan Orton as a locum teacher to the Dramatic Arts department. Mrs Emily Stockil-Smith returned at the end of the second term to take back the reins. The IEB NSC Dramatic Arts results for 2018 was pleasing as the class maintained the 78% overall average of 2017. The class of 2018 achieved 8 distinctions. Most impressive was the Practical average which again maintained the 83% average of 2018. This set the bar high for the class of 2019, who achieved a fantastic 79% overall average and an incredible 11 distinctions. The Dramatic Arts Department is home to 81 Grade 10 to 12 creative, talented boys and all Grade 8 and 9 boys, and as a department it continues to thrive. The numbers and calibre of the pupils speak to the success of the department and the status of Dramatic Arts at the College. The Grade 8 and 9 boys are introduced to drama skills and the study of plays through carefully chosen material designed to pique their interest and engage them in personal, social and global issues. This gives them a taste of the senior phase of Dramatic Arts. The Grade 8 and Grade 9 film tasks were screened in the fourth term. Grade 8s created their own opening sequence to a detective series and the Grade 9s created a Sweded Movie scene or trailer. The Grade 10 and 11 Dramatic Arts pupils are showing promise in exploring various genres, performance styles, scripting, directing and producing. Thando Myeza
