Chronicle-2019

46 A rigorous revision programme coupled with individualised assistance for pupils struggling in certain areas within the subject continues to bear fruit and has proven itself as an effective strategy in improving results across the board. The department is also very fortunate to be stable from a staffing point of view and I would like to place on record my sincere thanks to all the members of the department, namely Mrs Tracey van den Aardweg and Messrs Jonathan Beaumont and Jonathan Waldburger, for all their hard work and efforts over this past year. Two interns, Mr Mike Simpson and Mr John Wessels have also provided valuable assistance where necessary and I thank them for their efforts and contribution this year. Several tours and excursions took place throughout the year. The Grade 8 boys, as well as new boys to the College and a number of Australian exchange students, undertook their annual visit to the site of the original Kearsney College at Kearsney Manor on the KZN North Coast just inland from Kwa Dukuza (Stanger) in the third term and had the opportunity to explore various parts of the estate, including the Chapel and Cemetery as well as the old Manor House. As part of the Grade 9 Curriculum Enrichment Week, the Grade 9 classes had the opportunity to visit the Durban Holocaust and Genocide Centre where they had the opportunity to view the powerful and moving exhibits as well as participate in active workshop and discussion work. The popular Grade 10 visit to Gauteng took place during the last week of the Third Term and, once again, was thoroughly enjoyed by the boys. Accompanied by Messrs Waldburger and Wessels, the boys visited Liliesleaf Farm, the Apartheid Museum, the Voortrekker Monument, as well as Constitutional Hill on National Heritage Day. All in all, this was an an enriching educational experience for all concerned. HISTORY We were once again blessed with exceptional National Senior Certificate results for History at the start of 2019, for the class of 2018. 49.1% of candidates who wrote History achieved a distinction in the subject (compared to the IEB distinction rate of 23.7%). Daniel Phillips was also placed in the IEB top 1% in the subject nationally. This reflects positively on the department and I would like to pay tribute to all the members who contributed to the success of this group of talented and motivated pupils. No fewer than 54 out of 55 pupils who took the subject achieved either an ‘A’, ‘B’ or ‘C’ symbol in the subject which was phenomenal. Academic Review
