Chronicle-2019

54 It is encouraging to see the increasing interest in Music as a subject. 2019 saw 23 boys selecting Music as one of their subjects for study from Grade 10 to Grade 12. Within this subject, the boys are encouraged to expand their musical language in all aspects, with the focus being on music theory, music history and the practical instrument of their choice. These range from violin and saxophone to classical and pop voice. Focus is also given to composition, music technology and ensemble work, with boys often arranging or composing original works which are performed on various stages throughout the year. A great highlight for the Music department in 2019 was the construction of a recording studio within the department, where music students were fortunate to access this facility and grow a new set of skills. The end of the third term is a notoriously busy time, with many external practical examinations, inter-house music, as well as the final IEB practical examinations for the matrics. With such a busy schedule I am very proud to say that the following boys achieved outstanding distinctions for their external practical examinations. MUSIC Thando Myeza: Grade 8 ABRSM Singing William Young: Grade 7 ABRSM Singing Lefa Motshele: Grade 7 ABRSM Singing Sihle Manonyane: Intermediate Williams-Ross Singing Bandile Nzuza: Grade 5 ABRSM Singing Katlego Phetla: Grade 5 ABRSM Singing I commend these boys on their time-management and commitment to furthering their musicianship.
