Chronicle-2019

56 As the year draws to a close it is always rewarding to look back on what has been produced in the studio. The Grade 10 boys who arrived nervously at the beginning of year, unsure of what to expect and unsure of their ability, have since realised a passion and enjoyment for what they can produce. The Matrics, who started the year with a clear vision and strong determination to achieve, have seen these goals to fruition. The junior boys who thought Art may just have been a lesson to chill in, but surprised themselves by producing something of which they could be proud. As the end of year approaches, the Matric art exhibition has been installed and examined, most of the equipment has been packed away and the classroom remains empty for a little while. However, all the work that has been created in the art studio remains. These drawings, paintings and sculptures are testament to the boys who have invested time, effort and energy to create art which demonstrates a passion for creativity and innovation. This year, many boys entered the inaugural Red Dam drawing competition, submitting drawings which were exhibited with entrants from all over KwaZulu-Natal. Attending the exhibition opening was enlightening and gave the boys insight into what other artists, of the same age, were creating. Benjamin d’Avice was commended on his submission which was chosen for exhibition at the Eye4Art Gallery. Congratulations to the boys who spent hours in pursuit of their goal for Art awards. Mhlonishwa Zulu was recognised for his outstanding achievement and awarded Honours for Art while others were awarded colours for their commitment to the Art department. I hope that these young artists continue to encourage other young creatives within the Kearsney community. I challenge the boys to continue striving to refine their personal language of expression, not to be afraid to experiment with media and to embrace the unusual in their art-making processes and I look forward to another productive and exciting year in the studio.
