Chronicle-2019

63 CULTURE@KEARSNEY Cultural activities and clubs Culture@Kearsney is a year-long programme providing teachers and pupils with a platform and stage on which to display their talents and creativity. In this our 7th year running the programme we have seen tremendous growth in the number pupils participating as well as the quality of work, and Culture@Kearsney is a highlight in the cultural calendar of many schools. We continue to attract sponsorships which enable us to provide each participant with something to remind them of their experience. Pupils love to receive memorabilia and hopefully this token will continue. My sincere thanks to all the Kearsney staff, the participating schools and their pupils. Without the tireless efforts of everyone involved we would not have been able to stage all the events over the course of the year, and to all a huge bow and shouts of bravo. Launch and Art Exhibition Despite the weather all but destroying the plans for an outdoor launch of Culture@Kearsney 2019, the evening was highly successful, and was well attended by both regular participants and new recruits. The event opened in the Henderson Hall where guests were treated to a performance by the Kearsney College choir and two dance items by Eden College. As the rain abated guests moved across to the Bell Quad and Longroom for the viewing of the art exhibition. Guests mingled in the courtyard under a sky of fairy lights and were fortunate to witness “K3vseven”, a prominent Durban street artist, in action. Working in his signature style he painted over the course of the evening, completing a 3m x 4m piece. It was a treat for the visiting scholars and the art boys of the College to be able to observe and interface with him throughout the evening. 18 schools were represented at the Art exhibition and a high standard of work has been the continuing trend in this annual event. The exhibition remained open during the Open Weekend and many parents, past, present and future, commented on the abilities of the young artists. Mrs Andrea Fri pp and Mrs Joanne Hicks Teachers in Charge Music Festival We had two magical evenings of great music from various choirs and music ensembles. The schools that joined the festival were Highbury Preparatory School, Our Lady of Fatima Dominican Convent School, Pinetown Girls High School, Reddam House School, St Mary’s DSG, Danville Girls’ High School, Hillcrest Primary School, Michaelhouse, Pinetown Boys’ High School, St Anne’s DSG, Ubizo Choir and our own choir and orchestra performed. It’s always an eye opener to hear these choirs with the different sounds and unique styles of singing. Some choirs rendered beautiful performances that leaned more towards the classical side while other choirs included traditional African flavours and sounds in their choice of repertoire. Two ensemble highlights of the festival included the St Mary’s DSG marimba band, who performed energized pop and traditional numbers and of course our own orchestra, who performed Toss the Feathers by The Corrs with a live Irish Dance by Sbonge Maphumulo.
