65 Dance@Kearsney A much-anticipated Culture@Kearsney event which delivers an abundance of athleticism, rhythm and excitement through a variety of dance styles, presented in scintillating movement and motion, took place in the Henderson Hall in early August. The cutting-edge sound and light system in operation was mostly funded by KCOB Grant Smith from New York, enabling Kearsney to proudly host this event. Thirteen schools, state, independent, co-ed and monastic from city and rural environments, and three dance companies, presented twenty-seven dance items over a period of three nights. A variety of dance styles showcased the amazing talent on display as the young men and women delighted both the audiences and their fellow dancers with their performances on stage. The Kearsney boys worked with grit and determination to choreograph their three dance numbers, giving freely of their time over an extended period of rehearsals and performances to fulfil the vision of Culture@Kearsney. The ‘ junior’ group, comprising of 16 boys ranging in age from 13 to 16 years of age, choreographed a dance using many styles and adding luminous masks to enhance their spectacle of motion. Grade 9 pupil, Sbonge Maphumulo, wowed the crowd with his Irish dancing, particularly in the last night’s performance where he presented the unique combination of Irish dancing to ‘trap’ music. The more experienced group of dancers ranging in seniority from Grades 9 through to 12, presented a well-choreographed dance using various dance styles woven in a story of an individual’s desire to express himself. Some members of this dedicated group have participated in their fourth and fifth Dance@Kearsney events. We say farewell and thank you to Grade 12 pupil, Olwethu Buthelezi, who has shown and shared his dancing talent every year of his five years at the College.
