Chronicle-2019

70 12 CLUB Inspiring the greatest minds at Kearsney is one of the objectives of the club. Ensuring that these divergent thinkers are exposed to new and exciting experiences is important. We managed to pack some exciting activities into the boys’ busy year. We entered three Grade 11 teams into the Deloitte General Knowledge Quiz on 19 February. The quiz was challenging and explored various obscure topics that forced our boys to engage in new and quirky information and facts. Two of our teams placed in the top 10. “To know the history of your city and surrounds is to know your history”. In so young a democracy as ours much needs to be done to establish a sense of pride in our country and the nation we are becoming. This was the theme of our cultural and historical tour of Durban. We meandered through the backroads to Stanger, passing through small villages and the town of Tongaat as our tour guide delved into the history from 150 years ago, when the earliest immigrants to South Africa disembarked from ships to work on the sugar cane plantations. We stopped outside a beautifully hand-crafted temple in Tongaat and took in the bustle of the main street. We ventured onward to the Albert Luthuli Museum in Stanger, where his home is kept in a pristine state. The walls are adorned with famous historical pictures narrating his life’s work. The boys were pensive and thoughtful during the tour. We moved on to Mahatma Gandhi’s home in Phoenix. The quaint little house still stands alongside a museum built in his memory. We were fortunate to be guided through the museum’s latest exhibit of the history of the Shembe people, their life and traditions and culture. Our final stop for the day was at Sbu’s Lounge, a shisa nyama restaurant in the heart of the township of KwaMashu, where hungry boys were treated to a hearty feast – a match made only in Durban! In the final activity for the year, Grade 11 boys, some newly appointed to the 12 Club, traveled to the Toyota manufacturing plant in Prospecton, Durban. This exclusive tour had our boys in awe. We witnessed a pristine plant, with efficient systems to build some of South Africa’s most popular vehicles. We were enthralled by the efficacy of their systems and astounded by how quickly a car is manufactured. We were enlightened on topics from finance to science – the cost of importing materials to their sales and the viscosity of paint to suit Durban temperatures. We witnessed machinery in action and the thousands of checks and balances that ensure each vehicle is made to specification. This was the highlight of the year’s activities. We left the plant inspired, energised and excited about the future of vehicle manufacture in South Africa. It was a privilege to share these enriching experiences with the boys and to engage in discussions following these events. I hope that each boy has taken away at least one nugget that will drive him to achieve more, to think critically and recognise how their contributions can make a difference to this beautiful country. “The truth is that our finest moments are most likely to occur when we are feeling deeply uncomfortable, unhappy, or unfulfilled. For it is only in such moments, propelled by our discomfort, that we are likely to step out of our ruts and start searching for different ways or truer answers.” M Scott Peck Mrs Vanessa Gov ende r Teacher in Charge ART CLUB This year Art club made a reappearance onto the clubs calendar. With an energetic and passionate group of young artists attending every week to collaborate on painting, drawing and design. The boys who joined the club have an innate desire to create something from a uniquely expressively personal place making their paintings relevant to them and their interests. The boys also experimented with digital editing software such as Photoshop where basic principles of design and image manipulation were explored. With more boys joining Art club later in the year the group become dynamic, with drawing being used as a means of expression. A fun year in the art studio and the good beginning of a thriving club of creatives. Mrs Joanne Hicks Teacher in Charge By Zibusiso Zulu (Grade 12)
