Chronicle-2019

74 ENVIRO CLUB This year the team completed labelling the trees on the Kearsney campus. In addition, the McGladdery family conducted a study on the possibility of placing owl nests on the Kearsney grounds. A survey was conducted, and several sites identified as suitable. The nests were successfully placed, and we would like to thank Mr McGladdery for his efforts and suggestions on environmental matters. Mr Wayne Amos and Mr Dougan Macdonald Teachers in Charge FIRST AID CLUB 2019 has been a busy and successful year for the Kearney First Aid Club. We had 30 boys complete their Level 1 course in the 1st Term, and six boys completed their Level 3 course. Throughout the year the First Aiders were on hand to assist with injured boys at sports fixtures, showing great dedication. Over the Open Weekend, the First Aid Club boys manned a stall at the Sports and Clubs Expo. Here they strapped prospective Grade 8 pupils to a spine board and gave “rides” around the SportZone. They worked hard and were a big hit. Thank you to all those involved in the First Aid Club this year for your commitment and enthusiasm. Mrs Arie l l e Pe rrett Teacher in Charge DALE CARNEGIE The Dale Carnegie Generation Next course is based on the principles of Dale Carnegie’s bestselling book: How to Win Friends and Influence People. The course took place in the 1st and 3rd terms this year and was divided into eight three-hour-a-week sessions. The course was well-attended and over 50 Grade 11 boys graduated as Dale Champions this year. The course focuses on five areas of personal development, namely: self-confidence, communication, people skills, leadership and stress management. Each participant is required to create and present a vision board which communicates their future goals and aspirations, and, by the final session, each Champion has already achieved, or is practising, in areas reflected on their vision boards. The boys were required to vote weekly on the person they believe to be living according to their principles and working for their boards. This peer recognition is purposefully structured in this way so that boys can show appreciation and hold each other accountable towards the Dale Carnegie principles. The boys’ weekly progress was incredible, and the opportunities they were given to share resulted in them forming a special bond. The ever-enthusiastic Mrs Heather Roets facilitated the course, and Mr Daniel Marsh assisted her. Their passion and enthusiasm for the principles ingrained in this programme were inspiring and contagious and of great benefit to the boys. The boys received a certificate of completion at the end of the course and Luke dos Santos Niz and Matthew Murray were awarded the Best Overall Champions as voted for by the boys. Mr Kyl e Eys e l e Teacher in Charge Cultural activities and clubs Luke dos Santos Niz and Matthew Murray were awarded the Best Overall Champions as voted for by the boys.
