Chronicle-2019

78 MARIMBA BAND 2019 saw the continuation of last year’s efforts in establishing the Marimba Band as a prominent part of the Music department. The ten boys who continued to put lots of time into developing their own skills and those of others, are also involved in the Kearsney College Choir and some in the Orchestra too. Their commitment does not go unnoticed. The boys performed at various events throughout the year, including the launch of the Culture@Kearsney programme, the Culture@Kearsney Music festival, the many supper theatres in the Henderson Hall. The crowds at these events were wowed by the boys’ energy and excitement on stage, as they played their own original compositions and arrangements with brilliance. They finished off the year by winning the High Schools Marimba Band category at the South African National Band Championships. I anticipate yet another successful year for this ensemble in 2020 and more creative original works. Mr Brett Alborough Teacher in Charge MOUNTAIN BIKE CLUB The Mountain Bike Club has enjoyed an active year and the core group of 10 boys ride regularly. The boys experienced numerous outings on Friday afternoons this year, mostly outrides at Poly Pony and Giba Gorge. We also included some training in our own MTB track. We are active in all four terms and some of the boys also train and ride our MTB track in their free afternoons to get additional training. One of the greatest challenges we face as a club is the busyness of the boys and many of them are not always available to ride on Friday afternoons. Several of our boys competed competitively in the Spur Schools races this year in the 3rd term. There were four races this year: one at Kearsney, one at Maritzburg College, one at Waterfall College and the final event at Thomas More College. The Kearsney boys achieved well, especially Liam Theunissen who won all three races he participated in within the U14 category. He is an exceptional rider and dominated these races. He was the overall series winner trophy for the U14 age category for High School boys. He will be eligible to represent the KZN Schools XCO and Kearsney at the Spur Series SA Schools in Brits later in the year. David Shelly, competing in the U16 category, finished in 8th,10th, 7th and 9th positions. Dylan Kriel and Brandon Lock competed well in the U15 division. David Shelly is taking the sport seriously now and has raced in numerous one-day classic races this year and is improving all the time. David was invited to attend the Youth Cycling Festival in Sandini in September which was a four-day festival of riding. Mountain Biking is gaining momentum and we will continue to remain as active as possible. I would like to thank Mr Robinson for his support and enthusiasm. Mr Anthony Wi llows Teacher in Charge Cultural activities and clubs Kearsney College’s Marimba Band won the High School Marimba Band category at the South African National Band Championships at the end of September
