Chronicle-2019

79 ORCHESTRA It has been an absolute pleasure to continue working with the Orchestra in this my fourth year at the College, and this group of instrumentalists have certainly made my job look easy. We were fortunate not to lose any Grade 12s at the end of 2018 and have been able to continue to grow a fantastic group of young musicians and keep the standard of orchestral music where it should be. Each year lends itself to certain musical aspects, depending on the current selection of instruments taken by the boys of the College. We have a relatively small string section but have grown our winds and brass with the addition of two flutes and three trumpets to the existing strong saxophone section. There have also been opportunities for a smaller ensemble to perform at functions this year. There were approximately sixteen boys who were regulars on the stage this year, all of whom showed incredible passion and commitment to showcase the instrumental aspects of the school’s musical offerings. The Orchestra performed a variety of music this year, with Toss the Feathers by The Corrs being a hit. This was especially fun to perform as we were able to feature Sbongakonke Maphumulo’s talent as an Irish dancer. ORCHESTRA Back row: Kwazi Moyo, Flynn Bunyan, Leo Reim Middle row: Luke Hepker, Jezreel Naicker, Qhawe Mafika, Enzo Cocciante, Kudzai Kamwendo, Jens Otto Front row: Lefa Motshele, Matthew Strauss, Mr Brett Alborough, William Young, Ben Burton Another feature item was Let me be your Star from the musical TV series Smash, which was a challenge for the boys to play and I am very proud of their growth through their performances. I would like to thank the boys for their commitment this year and especially the two Grade 12 boys that are leaving. Finally, I would like to make mention of Kearsney College as a whole, for ensuring that there is a space for such a vital part of these boys’ lives. Culture is most certainly alive and well in these boys. Mr Brett Alborough Teacher in Charge Cultural activities and clubs
