Chronicle-2019

80 PHOTOGRAPHY CLUB During the year the members of the photography club (about 10-12 boys per term) have had the opportunity to gain in photography skill in the following aspects of photography: • Macro photography • Product photography making use of a light box • Ink in water • Light painting using flash and long exposure • Panning and freezing action • Low key portraiture • Making use of reflectors in photography • Posed Photography using creative light settings and gels The club recently added studio lights to the growing photography stock, and this allows for a whole new, and exciting, avenue of learning. Some of the boys have taken the opportunity of practicing their sports photography on a Saturday after playing for their own respective teams. Night-time cultural activities have also provided low-light photographic opportunities. Mrs Trac e y van den Aardweg Teacher in Charge PUBLIC SPEAKING Paul Ryan aptly put it when he said of achievement: “Every successful individual knows that his or her achievement depends on a community of persons working together”, and such has been the manner in which the Inner Circle and Speakers’ Circles have run this year. Each member has worked hard to be actively involved, step out of his comfort zone to try something new, and embrace each other’s efforts without judgement. This year, the Speakers’ Circle was chaired by the capable Tyler Gray who ensured he ran the events smoothly but remained involved in the speech-making, which is commendable. The Grade 10s proved themselves worthy role-models to the willing Grade 9s, who impressed me with their exceptional speaking ability and desire to get involved. I have no doubt that they will set a fine example to the Grade 8s joining us next year. The Inner Circle hosted two formal dinners this year, inviting speakers from St John’s D.S.G and St Anne’s Diocesan College respectively. The bravery of each speaker is remarkable and I salute the speakers who took up the challenge to produce such interesting and profound commentary around the themes of each evening. Loyiso Mabude chaired the dinners confidently and also ensured he competed in some of the categories this year. He is thanked for his calm demeanour. Nothing was ever too much to ask of Loyiso. The Inter-house Public Speaking event held in Term 3 is always a hotly-contested evening – amongst staff and boys alike - and this year did not disappoint. It was wonderful to see more juniors hold their own, and this year Grade 8, Liam Jansen van Rensburg delivered and won his toast to Sheffield House. The following boys were awarded Colours for Public Speaking: Hayden de Kock, Sizwe Sigasa, Alex Swanepoel and Andrew Watt. The following boys were awarded Colours for Public Speaking by winning two major categories over the past two years: Ezra Tsela, Reid Stuart, Zukile Habile, Loyiso Mabude and Luke Wilson The dinners held in the Greyhound are the highlight of each term – largely because of the delicious food – and my gratitude is extended to Sigrid Ceronio, Chartwells, Karen Seals and Sharon Mohan for the catering and décor provided for our formal dinners. They selflessly ensure that our evenings are of the highest calibre. Dua Lipa said, “Success, to me, is just doing things that I’m really proud of ”. I am so proud to be associated with the boys of this prestigious society and, because of this, it is sure to remain a huge success.
