Chronicle-2019

83 the conservancy, removing alien vegetation, and built jungle gyms and cleaned up litter. I would like to thank the parents for their assistance in this section. Cross-cultural study: In this section, boys were exposed to different cultural backgrounds as they were required to develop friendships with people from a different culture. They then had to complete a report on a new friend’s lifestyle. The reason for this section is that culture influences the way in which we see the world. Crosscultural study gives them a truly enriching experience, allowing them to learn about perspectives and traditions from other backgrounds. The acceptance of similarities and differences has helped them to become a global citizen. This diverse set of environments has exposed them to new skills and approaches to life. Leadership: This challenge involves an overnight expedition (it can be a hike, canoe trip, cycle ride) covering at least 20 km. It must be self-propelled, and the boys must have at least four other members in their group. One of the parents usually participates in this section. Activities range from beach walks to berg hikes to game reserve walks and farm walks. The process of completing this award is not easy and I would like to congratulate the young men who had the temerity and discipline to walk the distance and see this programme through to the end. Your determination paid off and your ability to see this massive task through to fruition highlights your character and ability. Mr Manzin i Zungu Teacher in Charge PRESIDENT’S AWARD The President’s Award challenges perseverance and commitment. Boys are required to complete various steps which include: 72 hours of community service; their participation in a four-day adventurous journey and regular participation in a physical activity. They are also required to obtain and show significant improvement in a new skill while participating in a residential project which lasts at least four days. The entire programme takes 18 months to complete. To achieve these requirements takes significant determination and only some will experience the sweet taste of success. It is, however, worth every moment! The interest in the President’s Award continues to grow, and I firmly believe that the success of the Pilgrim’s Award offered to the Grade 9’s has a positive impact on this. This year has not been as successful as in the past. Only three boys, out of a possible ten, submitted their portfolios for verification. Well done to the boys and I look forward to the confirmation of you receiving your Gold. We currently have 14 boys registered to the programme, which is less than the usual numbers. Quite a few boys have already completed their journey and have done several hours of community service. We hope that 2020 will be a repeat of 2018 with a high percentage of successful conversions. The annual awards evening held at the end of half-term in the fourth term was again a success, and it afforded the younger boys, who completed the Pilgrim Award, the opportunity to be informed of the tough but rewarding requirements of the Gold Award. The boys’ motivation was renewed after Timothy Camp shared his experience on his Gold Award journey. My thanks go to Mrs Andrea Fripp for her continuous support and encouragement of this programme as well as Mr Manzini Zungu, who laid the groundwork for the popular Pilgrim’s Award programme. Mr Marco Botha Teacher in Charge VIDEO EDITING CLUB The purpose of the Video Editing and Filming Club is to provide an opportunity for boys to experience the wonderful world of film-making and film editing. Boys are introduced to the video editing software, as well as the cameras, and are shown how to use these. They meet once a week to practice using the software and creating footage. Once they feel confident with the equipment, they are invited to film various school events. This provides real-life, on the ground training. Footage is then edited and stored as archive material. Some of the exciting projects we have covered have been creating stop animation footage and re-creating movie trailers in a different genre. The purpose of this club is to provide boys with enough experience in video editing and filming to make them confident and ready for projects of their own at home, and for friends and family members looking to capture magical events. It is wonderful to watch our boys master the use of the cameras and software and to see how their skills in video editing and filming develop! The knowledge they gain in this club affords them a glimpse into a career in video editing and filming. Mrs Bronwyn Barnard Teacher in Charge Cultural activities and clubs
