Chronicle-2019

SPORTS OVERVIEW Sport There were 51 provincial and two national representatives in the 14 sports offered by the College. A further 11 boys made provincial teams for sports not on offer at the school. Of these 11 boys, two went on the gain their national colours. These statistics are without a doubt very impressive and speak volumes for the standard of sport at the College. We are fortunate currently that our boys take their sport seriously and still want to participate when many other schools in both the country and our province are battling to fulfil sporting fixtures or remain competitive. In many quarters, it is being suggested that the time has come to specialize in certain sports as is determined by demand rather than the variety on offer at our College. We see no merit in this philosophy and we remain as competitive as ever in all our sporting codes and can still offer a variety of sports from which the boys can choose. This allows all our boys to compete or excel in the sport of their choice rather than having a sport forced upon them. The outstanding results achieved throughout all our sporting codes and provincial or national selections is testimony to this. An interesting statistic is that, without a doubt, the fastest growing sport in schools throughout the country is Basketball. We are no different in that we were able to offer 26 sides throughout the age groups. This comes with challenges with fixtures, coaches and facilities. We were able to work around these challenges and it was rewarding to note that our 1st Basketball Team has remained unbeaten in the domestic league to date and were runners up in the recent Independent Schools Basketball Tournament hosted by ourselves. The tournament attracted Independent Schools from around the country and neighbouring states. We unfortunately lost by a mere two points in the final.
