Chronicle-2019

Sport There were many highlights in the sporting calendar this year but below are some of the outstanding achievements: • In the recent Top 10 water polo tournament to establish the best water polo playing schools in the province, our boys proved their worth with the U14 and U15 teams ending 3rd and as the first team to reach the final. In the final which was an action-packed nail-biting affair our boys excelled and led for the entire game until three seconds remaining on the clock. Our opposition scored to tie the game on the hooter. This necessitated a penalty shoot out to establish a winner and unfortunately we lost in this manner, having to settle for 2nd place. • The introduction of Indoor Hockey which is being played during the 3rd term is another sport growing in popularity among the boys. We entered teams in the U14, U16 and U18 leagues. Our U14 boys finished top of their pool in the round robin stages ending fourth overall. The U18 team won the “B” section league and have been promoted to the “A” section next year. Our U16 team competed in the “A” league and finished top of the pool after the round robin stages and then went on to win overall remaining unbeaten throughout. • Menzi Mhlungu breaking a 48-year-old record for the U16 100 meters at the inter-house athletics meeting. • Matthew Bergset winning the Junior Africa Challenge Golf Championships. Once again, many of our sporting teams were able to participate in festivals and tours in and around the country during the year. Even in this tough economy where these tours are becoming more expensive, we believe the benefit is an absolute crucial part of the growth in our sportsman’s careers. The opportunity to compete against teams and schools of different strengths and playing styles assists our boys in their own development. On a sporting facilities side we were able to upgrade or improve the following: The swimming pool change-rooms and ablutions were upgraded; A hockey seating stand at the astro was built; The area around the Astro hockey clubhouse has had new paving laid; A paved and seating area was created around the A H Smith Oval; New up to date and modern gym equipment has been installed in the gym. In order to succeed and perform at the level we expect from our boys takes many hours, lots of patience and commitment. To all the role players who have assisted in ensuring the success of sport at the college a big thank you. To you the parents, Old Boys, supporters and boys thank you for your support ensuring yet another successful year. Mr Kei th Thompson Director of Sport
