Chronicle-2019

88 Basketball continues to grow and prosper at Kearsney. The sport has come along way in the last ten years and Kearsney can no longer be viewed as an easy fixture for the KwaZulu-Natal schools circuit and is now viewed as an increasingly tough fixture. The sport has grown in popularity to such an extent that, we are now able to field twenty teams on a Saturday. The passion for the sport is infectious and boys are always seen bouncing basketballs around campus. The spectators have also created a unique vibe at home games and the stands fill up with boys who come of their own accord to watch their teams play. They are never disappointed and excitement levels are always high. Kearsney’s basketball programme is now recognised as one of South Africa’s premier school programmes. Both the junior and senior teams perform well and compete for high honours at the country’s most prestigious basketball tournaments. All of this would not be possible without the support of the College. Mr Keith Thompson, director of sport, has been instrumental in helping the programme achieve and grow. Much of the success is due to the commitment and efforts of the coaches, namely Mr Nhlanhla Dlamini, Mr Khayani Nzama and Mr Andile Ntshingila, who all go above and beyond their job description. The additional support from the Kearsney staff and outside coaches, who are committed the programmes’ goals, have also contributed to the success. The players are recognised as sportsmen in their own right. There are some exciting teams coming through the ranks, which bodes well for the future of the programme. It will be exciting for spectators, both boys and parents, to pack out the SportZone for games in the next few years, as the teams are playing an exciting brand of basketball.
