Chronicle-2019

95 The team picked themselves up and played like a team possessed for the remainder of the season, reminding everyone why they were considered the best U16 team in the country. The team was dismantled in the fourth term season with the majority of the starting five going on to play for the first team and two members selected for the foreign exchange programme. Those remaining players were combined with the U16B team and formed the third team during the third and fourth term season. They continued to give a good account of themselves despite being a bit short handed. New players stepped up to show what they could remind us that the depth of talent in this age group is good and a good indicator of things to come. It was enjoyable to coach these young men and they have ended the year as better players, and people, which is all you can ask of a team of this calibre. Results Term 1: Played 15, Won 12, Lost 1 Results Term 3 and 4: Played 6, Won 5, Lost 1 Mr Khaya Nzama Coach Under 16B Basketball Term 1 Regular players: Njabulo Cele, Nqobile Dweba, Dylan Forbes, Siphosethu Jackson, Matthew Jacobs, Mhleli Khuzwayo, Kwazi Moyo, Aphiwe Ngwenya, Bulelani Nodada The U16 age group has proven to be a talented group of players and there are several players who would develop during the season to go on and make a significant contribution to the team’s success. Confidence in your ability on the court is vital. As the boys’ skills developed so their confidence grew, and they began to believe in the game play and by the end of the season were executing it well. There were no perfect performances and there was always a lot to work in practice but due to their determination they improved weekly. The only loss of the season came when they played Maritzburg College and were outclassed by the athleticism of the opposition. It was, however, not an easy match and the opposition were made to fight for their victory. Practice was always fun and competitive with boys pushing each other to improve and show that they had what it took to make their way into the A team. I have no doubt that some of them will indeed go on to play for the 1st team once they have honed their skills as there were several talented individuals on team.
