Chronicle-2019

96 It is always rewarding to see how far a team has come at the end of the season and to look back and enjoy the memories of the journey. I am confident that this team will evolve into the team that they have shown promise of during the season. Results: Played 6, Won 5, Lost 1 Mr Arnold Mos eya Coach Under 16C Basketball Term 1 Regular players: Asandile Buthelezi, Noah Dammann, Lindokuhle Dladla, Campbell Duckworth, Oliver Fly, Matthew Foord, Dylan Forbes, Daniel Hayden, James Jordan, Nicholas Kidd, Ite Machobane, Qhawe Mafika, Andrew Sandy, Matthew Schramm, Declen Sumner These players were a pleasure to coach, and they gave 100% commitment to the team and to each other. Some of them had not played basketball before, but they were keen to learn. Once they grasped the basics they improved with each game and it was pleasing to see their positive attitude on the field. They all played with tenacity and never gave up, which resulted in some very close games, even when the opposition had a substantial lead. It was a pity the team never got regular games and often played “fillers” against stronger opposition, but they were always ready and were keen to just get a game. Many of these players will move up to play in a higher team as they progress to the older age group and I wish them all the best. Results: Played 5, Won 3, Lost 2 Mr Wayne Amos Coach Under 16D Basketball Term 1 Regular players: Asandile Buthelezi, Liyabona Cezula, Ben D’Avice, Campbell Duckworth, Ongama Duze, Oliver Fly, Matthew Foord, James Jordan, Nicholas Kidd, Jens Otto, James Riceman, David Shelly The season started with many boys turning out for trials, many of whom had never played Basketball before and who needed a crash course in positional play and tactics. This team had very eager players, but they were unable to show off their talent as the first two games were cancelled due to rain on the outdoor courts. This did not stop the enthusiasm and the boys worked hard, improving as the season progressed. Against a strong St Charles College side, they put all their hard work together to get a 26-17 win. Just as the team were beginning to get their momentum the following weeks game had to be cancelled due to the wet conditions. The season ended abruptly, and the boys were off to their winter sports. Results: Played 6, Won 1, Drew 3, Lost 3 Mr Wayne Amos Coach Under 15A Basketball Term 1 Regular players: Jason Brien, Matthew Campbell, Matthew Damons, Sithe Fumanisa, Arthur Jorgensen, Lehumo Mahlabana, T’re Motsoahae, Sifiso Msomi, Fynn Pollock, Adam Pons, Adam Williams Term 3 and 4 Regular players: Jason Brien, Matthew Campbell, Matthew Damons, Dagan De Witt, Sithe Fumanisa, Arthur Jorgensen, Lehumo Mahlabana, Sphe Mnguni, Sifiso Msomi, Adam Pons, Adam Williams This team was full of raw potential. From speed to athleticism to basketball IQ and passion, they possessed it all. One area they struggled though, was the ability to transfer this raw talent onto the court. This resulted in a mixed set of results where some games saw excellent play and others where defeat was inevitable. The first term saw them start to gel as a team. The boys began to realise that if they practiced hard it would improve their performance for the team and improve their place in the pecking order on the court. The team’s offence was centred on a quick run-and-gun approach in the first term and as the player’s skill level improved, it changed to a more structured and deliberate game. On defence, the team, while athletic, was still not used to applying the required pressure in league games. Individually, the boys played good defence, but they struggled to bring that together as a team. The most promising aspect of this team must be their work ethic and willingness to be guided by their coach. These aspects will stand them in good stead. This team shows tremendous potential and I look forward to seeing what is unleashed in 2020.
