Chronicle-2023

105 104 Under 14B Basketball The Under 14 age group has a great deal of talent and it took some time to sort the players into the correct teams, with much movement during the first few weeks. Having such depth makes coaching easier, as players must fight hard to keep their places. This competitive environment encourages them to work hard to improve and move up to higher teams. It also helped that many players had some basketball experience. The B team had an impressive run of victories in the first term, easily defeating opponents and not really being challenged. They impressed so much that they were invited to participate in the Michaelhouse U14 Tournament, where they competed against A teams. They performed well and finished in a creditable 5th place. The only loss they experienced was to Northwood in the regular season games during the fourth term. This loss was due to not making free throws or finishing open layups. It showed the team that they would have to play hard to beat opponents who are more athletic and playing on their home courts. Regular players: Nande Mzobe, Monde Sithole, Luphawu Socikwa, Melokuhle Mthethwa, Adam Georgiadis, Sikandar Ahmad, Mhleli Khumalo, Thabani Mthethwa, Dylan Watkins and Noah Brodowicz Results 1st term: Played 6, Won 6 3rd and 4th term: Played 5, Won 4, Lost 1 Michaelhouse Tournament: Played 7, Won 4, Lost 3. Finished 5th. Mr Andile Ntshingila Coach Under 14C Basketball The 2023 basketball season has been one of the most successful ever. The year started with talented and enthusiastic basketball players who brought many skills and commitment to the game. It was evident from the first time they stepped on the court that the players came from successful development programmes and were eager to build on their knowledge. The young athletes showed tremendous respect for the game on and off the court; their dedication was exemplary and admirable. They were on the basketball court most afternoons, trying to improve their game and introducing it to other students who showed an interest in it. Special thanks go to all the parents who have been our biggest supporters. Their support is truly appreciated. I wish all the players the best as they move to U15 next year. With your talent and dedication, the possibilities are endless, and success is guaranteed. The season began in term one, with the players scoring many points in every game, and tall defenders prevented the opposition from scoring any baskets and retrieving rebounds off the backboard. Some players improved tremendously and were promoted to higher teams. They were replaced with others who were just as competent. In the 2nd part of the season, the players maintained the momentum and kept pressure on the opposition. The season culminated in a tense but fair match against a Northwood side that had also been unbeaten. The Kearsney players showed real grit in this fixture and scored the final basket with seconds to spare, thus resulting in an unbeaten year. As a coach, it was remarkable to encounter such a talented and dedicated group of players. They must be congratulated on an outstanding season. They practised tirelessly, attended every game, and always gave their best. This commitment allowed them to improve and grow as players. Even though they did not win every game, the true essence of this team was their unwavering enthusiasm and ‘never say die’ attitude. Despite their challenges on the court, their camaraderie and team spirit never wavered and I could not be prouder of their progress throughout the season.
