With full river systems, the paddlers took advantage and enjoyed excellent river racing conditions. Canoeing continues to provide unique opportunities to boys of a wide range of abilities to be involved in a healthy alternative to traditional sports. We aim to provide opportunities for boys to learn a new skill and develop it so that they become the best they can be in their chosen sport. Regular training was at our new Inanda Dam home venue. The team members have been extremely fortunate to be mentored and motivated through the input of highly experienced coaches and Old Boys who have previously been members of the canoeing team. Callam Davis (SA K1 1000m champion) and Andrew Sebire (Class of 2022) provided extra motivation and individual attention to all team members, allowing them to develop the correct technique right from the start and improve their competency. Upgraded boat racks were erected at Inanda dam, making access and storage of boats significantly better, and regular time trials once again started on Wednesday evenings. In the inter-schools competition, the paddlers raced on the Dusi, Lions, Tugela and Umgeni rivers, which provide the most excitement in the canoeing calendar. The boys also competed in flat-water marathon and sprint events. The Kearsney team once again produced some excellent results, punching well above their weight. Rory Treleaven and Raine Scoular both had success in their respective age groups. In recognition of their ability and achievements, Rory and Raine shared the Paddler of the Year award. Kearsney finished 4th overall in the 2023 Inter-School League, missing out on a podium position by nine points. In the individual U16 age group competition, Raine Scoular finished 5th and Rory Treleaven 6th. These excellent results, as well as some promising U14 paddlers making rapid progress, are key indicators that Kearsney will continue to be competitive next year.
