Chronicle-2023

117 116 3rd XI Cricket The 3rd XI experienced a season characterised by a slow start that gradually transformed into a commendable season. The boys demonstrated resilience and determination, turning the tide with a series of impressive victories in their last three matches. Despite the initial challenges, the team's progress showcased a positive trajectory and the potential for future success. After overcoming a sluggish beginning, the team displayed a remarkable improvement in their cricketing skills. The players exhibited grit and determination, particularly in the closing moments of closely contested matches. Winning their last three games, each of which went down to the wire, reflected the team's ability to handle pressure and perform when it mattered most. One of the key factors contributing to the team's success was the continuity in player selection. This stability allowed the players to build chemistry, understanding each other's strengths and weaknesses on the field. The development of a positive team culture played a crucial role, fostering a supportive and encouraging environment. Leadership within the team emerged as a driving force, further enhancing the overall team dynamics. As the season progressed, the team began hitting their stride with notable improvements in batting, bowling, and fielding. The players showcased their skills in all facets of the game, indicating a comprehensive development and a well-rounded team. The positive momentum gained towards the end of the season suggests that the team was on the verge of reaching its peak form. In summary, the 3rd XI’s journey in the 2023 season was a tale of perseverance, improvement, and team cohesion. The lessons learned and the momentum gained set the stage for a promising future, making the team one to watch in the upcoming cricket seasons. With some extremely talented players, the team played some very attractive cricket and won all of its games in the first term. Notable performances were a seven-wicket victory over Hilton and a 25-run victory over Michaelhouse. The fourth term brought some challenges, with many injuries and the absence of our grade 12 boys. We found it tough to find a stable side for the term. Nevertheless, when the call was made, the boys of the College stepped up, and we were able to field a side for every match. The 4th XI got to experience the excitement of the 100-ball format in a triangular series hosted by Hilton College. Unfortunately, we lost our first game to Hilton by three wickets, but we took it right down to the wire. Our second game was against St Charles College, where we put up more of a fight but unfortunately lost the game by three wickets. We bounced back after the two losses in fine fashion, beating DHS by 51 runs and getting our revenge against St Charles College, beating them by 56 runs. I would like to thank Jarred van Staaden for always helping me put a side together and for always finding willing boys to play on Saturdays. The team showcased remarkable talent, sportsmanship, and resilience throughout the season, contributing to the school's proud cricketing tradition. I thank every boy who played for the 4th team this year. Your efforts and dedication are much appreciated. Regular players: Anele Cele (Captain), Devahn van der Walt, Ezile Nodada, Martin Booyens, Keegan Peters, Simanye Mlakalaka, Onalenna Nameng, Calum Skewis, Doan Nel, Jarred van Staaden, Milo Matikinca, Siso France, Reece Brown, Carl Jansen van Vuuren, Keikantseona Masilo, Rory Treleaven, Adam Grey, Brandon, Dylan Howard Roydan Madatt, Connor McIntyre, Qhamani Mlalandle, Christian Snyman Results: Played 12, Won 8, Lost 3, Abandoned 1 Mr Terrence Boyce Coach The side only played in the first term, being amalgamated into various senior sides in the fourth term. Even though this side did not strike up too many wins as a team, individuals excelled at various times in the term. Jason de Gryse excelled with the bat and ended the term with a batting average of 46.6 runs, something he can be proud of. Michael Groom, Cole Young and Nicholas Munro all achieved some batting success during the term. Michel Groom, Nicholas Comrie, and Blake Pugh found wickets on a regular basis, whilst the spin attack of Jason de Gryse and Hayden Dunsdon was a handful for most batsmen. The highest wicket taker during the first term was Nicholas Comrie, with 10 wickets. Blake Pugh showed fantastic improvement with the ball, whilst Nicholas Munro found form towards the end of the term with the bat. The players that represented the side this year all have the capability to challenge for spots in the top senior sides, but only if they put their mind to it and understand that nothing is achieved without hard work. This season has had its challenges, but it is great to see that even when some of the top players have been unavailable, there are still players that can take their places and still represent their school with pride. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr Dylan Rae, the outside coach for his input and support this year, and to all the players who represented the side with passion and pride.
