Not only would the boys be playing on a new carpet, but they would also be playing under a new coach with a different perspective on how hockey should be played. The change of coach was aided by an addition to the strength and conditioning staff, Miss Danielle Cairns. The appointment of Mr Jethro Eustice as Head of Hockey saw the final cog in the new programme. These staff members set new standards, principles, and procedures. After a prolonged preseason, during which the group travelled to St Mary’s for training, the squad was finally whittled down to 15 boys. The 2023 team played a more fluid and dynamic style of hockey, emphasizing the understanding of structures and managing momentum shifts. It took the boys a while to fully grasp this new style. The season started well with a 1-0 win versus a wellcoached Clifton College side. The annual Founders Festival saw ten quality teams visit Parktown Boys’ High School for five games of hockey over three days. The first game against Paul Roos was disappointing as Kearsney went down 4-0. The boys overcame some tricky moments in the remaining four games and won them all. The performance of the festival was a 6-1 win versus Parktown Boys’ High School. After a two-day hiatus, we travelled to King Edward VII (KES) for their annual Rugby and Hockey Easter Festival. We anticipated the challenges posed at this festival would be more significant than our previous experiences. Competing against some of the highestranked schools in the country provided a significant benchmark for assessing our current position and goals moving forward. 1st Team Hockey Dylan Wiggett
