Chronicle-2023

135 134 3rd Team Hockey As a newbie to hockey, I faced this new challenge with some trepidation. However, I was privileged to be handed a group of young men who made my immersion into hockey coaching seamless. They were talented, skilful, and played with real passion. The team dynamic was impressive, as was their dedication and determination to play as competitively as possible. They often came up against formidable opposition, but that did not deter them from playing for the badge. Had more luck and the odd favourable decision come our way, we would have beaten more fancied sides. The players accepted my inexperience as a coach and I learned a great deal from them. I am very grateful for that and will undoubtedly take those lessons learnt into the 2024 season. Highlights of the season must be our 8-0 drubbing of the Glenwood 2nd XI and our impressive 4-1 win against a competent Northwood side. Our keeper, Reuel Jaggernath, must get a special mention as his contribution to the season was immense. It was a season to remember, not necessarily for the results, but for the time spent with quality players who embody all we strive for at Kearsney regarding behaviour and commitment. Thanks, too, to our parent body for their unwavering support, the hockey coaches for their willingness to share their wealth of knowledge, and our ever efficient and positive Head of Hockey, Mr Jethro Eustice. A win against Glenwood High School followed this success. Throughout the season, the team’s dynamic evolved significantly. Despite facing tough opponents, they remained steadfast and never allowed themselves to be intimidated. Though we faced more challenges than anticipated, the team grew into a close-knit family, united in their fight for each other and the Kearsney badge. However, there was always enthusiasm and commitment to the team and every player gave their best. A tight draw against powerful Clifton and Westville sides was a relatively gentle introduction to what could have been a difficult season. These hard-fought matches led to the Founder's Festival hosted by Northwood. The team managed exciting victories against Rondebosch and Dale, followed by losses to exceptionally strong SACS, Paul Roos and Affies teams. After a short break, the season continued with exciting wins against Michaelhouse and Glenwood and difficult losses against Northwood, College, St Charles and Hilton. The team endeavoured to improve as the season progressed, always putting in 100%. The boys chosen for the Provincial sides must be congratulated on their selections.
