Chronicle-2023

153 152 5th XV Rugby The 5ths 2023 season was a rollercoaster of highs and lows, marked by displays of unyielding spirit, character and pride. The team faced challenging moments, especially during the first half of the season, managing to clinch just two victories out of six games. The magnitude and closeness of several losses sorely tested the boys' grit and determination. But what stood out this season was the team's resilience and unwavering spirit. When many might have written them off, the boys showed immense character and resolve to turn their season around, clinching consecutive away victories against DHS and Glenwood. Sheyn Le Roux's exemplary leadership in these pivotal matches deserves special mention. The clash with Glenwood emerged as the season's standout performance. Having settled into a consistent lineup by this point, the team unleashed an expansive, attractive brand of rugby that was a delight to watch. This was particularly commendable given the robust physicality they faced from the opposition. Riding this wave of momentum, the team seemed poised to close the season with a hat-trick of wins. However, Hilton's last-minute resurgence in the concluding match curtailed that aspiration. Despite this setback, the boys showcased remarkable tenacity and honour, epitomising the values associated with the Kearsney jersey. With that in mind, the training was a lot more intensive than the boys were used to. However, they embraced the concept of “suffering in practise” so that the game became a culmination of the week’s effort and not necessarily about the score or result. The willingness of the boys to embrace the intensity of training sessions and their subsequent excellent results on Saturdays meant that we achieved the objectives set out at the beginning of the season. Most of the players that started the season in the 6th team played in teams as high as the 3rds by the end, which we were proud of. The bulk of the starting team went on to represent the 4th and 5th teams with aplomb. The team struggled to implement a consistent gameplan, as the injuries from the higher teams meant that our prominent players were moved up and we had to constantly restart the process with incoming players from the 7ths and 8ths. Despite those challenges, and the numerous injuries to our core players, the boys miraculously executed the structure perfectly in the final game of the season against Hilton College. It was a flawless execution of the game plan they had worked on all season, culminating in an incredible 50 – 0 victory in a game that had to be concluded before the full-time whistle. Many players contributed to the season's success. The long list of players who represented the sixth team shows how many players were integral to the team’s success when called upon. Thank you to the men who sacrificed their time, effort and energy in one of the most enjoyable seasons of my entire coaching career. Despite the coach’s sometimes excessive exuberance during training sessions, this group of players never complained or gave up. I am extremely proud of the effort shown by all the players who represented and contributed to the 6th team of 2023. The team embarked on a journey filled with challenges and learning opportunities, ultimately leading to personal and collective growth. The team struggled initially in terms of cohesion and communication, but over time the players learned to leverage their strengths to form a stronger unit. As the season progressed players began anticipating each other's movements and making split-second decisions as a unified group. This progress improved their performance on the field and strengthened the bonds between teammates. While the win-loss record was mediocre, the season was one of growth, resilience, and learning. The challenges faced by the team led to valuable experiences that transcended the rugby field. Through perseverance, teamwork, and sportsmanship, the players learned the importance of unity, character, and personal growth.
