Chronicle-2023

169 168 (2-0) and Clifton College (2-0). Our final game of the season was against Westville Boys’ High, which we lost 1-4. Overall, we played some very good football and the players must be given credit for their positive approach to the short but intense season. We congratulate Lethokuhle Ngidi for making the KZN Schools U19 team, which travelled to Johannesburg and won an Inter-regional/ Academy tournament. The 1st team was privileged to have matrics like Chad Croshaw, Hayden Bishop, Ethan Groom, Solethu Mdladla, James Gillespie, Dylan Wiggett, Siyen Gounden and captain Asande Nyawose, who never gave up and won many games for the team in the dying minutes of play. A special mention must go to Mrs Danielle Cairns for the extra high performance and conditioning she provided for the 1st and 2nd team players. There was a definite reduction in injuries in 2023 as a result. MrManzini Zungu Mr Wayne Amos Mr Sheldon Roux Coaches With both coaches being new to KZN and KZN football, we took some time to get to know our players and the style of football played by the teams in KZN. As coaches, we wanted to get to know our players and the style of football our opposing schools play. Our season began with a learning experience at Hilton, where we were humbled 1-4, but it grew to where we beat Michaelhouse 4-0, playing an attractive brand of attacking football. The victory against Michaelhouse was one of the highlights of the season and epitomised the principles of discipline, teamwork and playing within a structure that allows for individual expression. What was particularly pleasing was seeing many of our squad of players develop and become better soccer players. This culminated with the selection of Alwande Mbonambi and Ntsika Mfayela as permanent members of the first team. Bonga Mbhele and Keegan Gevers also improved in leaps and bounds this season and became essential members of the team effort. Sanelisiwe “Captain my Captain” Sawuti, along with Samelo Shweni, Tyron Keylock and Callan Osborne, deserve special mention. Sawuti was the leader of the team and undoubtedly made a significant contribution SOCCER 2ND TEAM Back row (L-R): Solwazi Ngwane, Tyron Keylock, Ntsika Mfayela, Keegan Gevers, Onalenna Nameng, Tshepiso Mokoena Front row: Samelo Shweni (goal-keeper), Mr Bennie Pietersen, Alwande Mbonambi, Mfundo Mthethwa, Mr Njabulo Nkabinde, Dhiyarv Govender 2nd Soccer to its development and success. Shweni’s brilliant saves and exemplary marshalling of the defence helped save us many blushes. Keylock’s keen head and knack for being in the right place at the right made him our top scorer. Osborne’s dedication to the team and willingness to play anywhere we needed him made him stand out and he was sorely missed, after his injury. Seeing the way our boys adapted to our coaching style and getting to know the special group of boys we were privileged to coach, was humbling. The team’s tenacity, dedication and never-give-up attitude will bode them well in their soccer careers or as they embark on their first year of university. This team showed the dogged determination that defines a Kearsney boy, and that same determination will help our boys seize the day!
