Chronicle-2023

173 172 Following a 2-1 defeat to Hilton College in the opening fixture of 2023, the Kearsney U16A soccer team swiftly rebounded with consecutive victories over Kloof High School, Clifton College and Northwood School. They emerged triumphant in each of these matches without conceding a single goal. It was only in the fifth game, against a formidable Westville Boys’ High School side, that Kearsney first conceded a goal in open play, a testament to a highly organised defensive quartet spearheaded by captain Moroale Rachidi. While occasional lapses in discipline within the box marred the team's record, they consistently demonstrated resilience and character in challenging situations. This toughness was particularly evident in the penultimate fixture against Michaelhouse. Trailing 0-2, and down to ten players early in the first half, the boys showed remarkable attacking prowess and mental determination, scoring two goals to secure a thrilling draw. Blake Pugh deserves special mention for his tireless work rate up front, which allowed highly skilled playmaker Sipho Majiza to calmly expose weaknesses in opposing defences. This dynamic often created scoring opportunities, even against the run of play. Despite the short season, consisting of only seven matches, the team displayed impressive dedication and a collective ethos, prioritising teamwork over individualism. Humility and mutual respect characterised this team, which boasted a diverse range of football abilities. However, this gave us the opportunity to bring in new players and allowed two international exchange students, Max Wolfl and Nico Hodnett, to join the team. Our goal for the season was to compete at our best against some of the toughest teams in the league, to be a physical presence on the field, and to have as much fun as possible, while learning to play simple, attractive football. My favourite moment as coach was when we drew 0-0 to Westville Boys’ High in one of the most physical games of schoolboy soccer I have ever seen. It was our last game, so it crowned an enjoyable season. I want to mention the efforts of our fearless leader, Cullen Abrahams, who led by example. His captaincy and relationships with his peers and adults stood him in good stead for the season. Our defensive line, midfielders, and attackers all deserve a mention. Together, we played our best football—as a team. I am proud of the strength with which the boys played and how they prioritised the team above themselves. I want to thank each boy and all the parents who gave me the support I needed to coach the team. I enjoyed every practice and every match, and I will remember coaching this team for years. The highlight of the season, a moment that will be etched into the team's history, was the resounding 5-1 victory over Westville Boys’ High. Right from the kick-off, it was evident that the team was on a mission, relentlessly attacking the opponent's goal. Behind this comprehensive win lay weeks of hard work during practice sessions.
