Chronicle-2023

180 Under 14D Soccer I thoroughly enjoyed coaching the U14D soccer side. These boys were enthusiastic and committed to improving their soccer skills. It was a season plagued by injuries, which meant other players had to step up. I was pleased to see that the boys did exactly that. This shows great character and team spirit. I look forward to watching them play soccer in the years ahead. The players always attended practice enthusiastically and enjoyed their Saturday matches, win or lose. In a season marked by challenges and tough competition, the U14 E/F team found a glimmer of success with a significant victory in a well-fought match against Westville. Despite a series of ups and downs, the team's perseverance shone through in a memorable game that stood out in an otherwise demanding season. While the team faced challenges and might not have secured victories in every match, the season provided valuable learning experiences. As the season concludes, the team can reflect on the journey, recognising areas of achievement and identifying aspects for improvement. The players realise the importance of learning from setbacks and will definitely apply this as stepping stones for future success. The first team comprised Grade 10 and 11 boys who competed well against some of the best sides in KZN and the rest of the country. The first term saw the 1st team competing in the KZN Top 8 series. Top 8 series results: Beat Hilton 7-1 Lost to Maritzburg College 3-5 Beat Epworth/St Charles 7-1 Beat Glenwood 6-2 Lost to Westville 5-3 Lost to Michaelhouse 5-3 In the 2nd week in February, the 1st team travelled to the annual St Andrew’s FNB Festival in Bloemfontein. This is always a good opportunity to pit our strength against some of the best sides in the country. Fielding our strongest team in quite some time, the boys acquitted themselves very well against tough competition from around the country, recording the following results: St Andrew’s FNB Festival results: Beat St Andrews (Grahamstown) 6-0 Beat Parktown Boys High 6-0 Beat St Stithians College 5-1 Beat Grey College 4-2 Beat Kingswood College 4-2 Over the course of the year, we fielded a 3rd division side in the Durban Mens’ League. The boys benefitted significantly from the opportunity to play against the varied styles that the adult game brings to the sport and also enjoyed the more social aspect of the adult leagues. As has become the norm over the past few years, our Kearsney players were very involved in the KZN tournaments this year, and Kearsney was well-represented in KZN selections. The annual Old Boys’ fixture, the Rodder Cup, took place in Term 3. This year, the Old Boys triumphed against the boys by winning a few crucial five-setters. As has become the case over the past few years, the school championships and inter-house competition were fiercely contested resulting in the following awards presented at the Awards Assembly: Open Champion: Bryce Blomquist U16 Champion: Jason de Gryse U14 Champion: Matthew de Gryse Most Improved Player: Jack Stroh Inter-house Champions: Finningley and Pembroke tied The fourth term saw our ‘stayers’ 1st team travelling to the Menlo Park Stayers’ Festival in Pretoria. Our players did well, achieving the following results: Beat the Egoli Gold Development Academy 5-1 Beat St Stithians 5-1 Lost to Menlo Park 4-2 Lost to Pretoria Boys High 4-2 2023 was a very encouraging year full of squash highlights. I would like to thank the 1st team captain, Bryce Blomquist and the 1st team players for their commitment and sterling service to the game at Kearsney. These boys have worked hard at maintaining the standard of the game at the College and look set to do very well as the bulk of our 1st team players will remain for the 2024 season.
