HONOURING KEARSNEY BENEFACTORS Every gift to Kearsney has a direct impact on the education of students, their lives and their futures. The Sir Liege Hulett Award is bestowed in recognition of Kearsney’s major benefactors. 2023 marked the genesis of a new chapter in the lore of Kearsney College as we drew a close to the fine tenure of Elwyn and Tracey van den Aardweg and welcomed Patrick and Sarah Lees to the Hill. The KCOB has welcomed our new Headmaster with somewhat more decorum than we traditionally reserve our cousins from Balgowan – and are pleased to report that not only do we commend the Board’s appointment but also look forward to years of bountiful harvest under his till. The KCOB continues to be a conduit and enabler of the fellowship shared during our time at the College. We have enjoyed a successful year of branch functions and events across our national and international chapters, highlighted by Founders’ Week. The 2023 Founders’ Week was held in June, with a successful schedule of events punctuated by nostalgic reconnection and remembrance. Our Old Boys took on the fleet-footed boys of the College in hockey and squash, with a far more leisurely, but equally contested Golf Day at Kloof Country Club. The Class of 1973 were welcomed for a Survivor’s Chapel Service and Lunch, with the evening capped off with the KCOB Black-Tie Dinner. Special mention must be made of Dr Graeme Shuker, Class of 1948, celebrating his 75th anniversary, which was commemorated by the Shuker and Kearsney families by the announcement of the Graeme Shuker Legacy Fund. Saturday saw the College take on St Charles in a feast of sporting codes, with the determined One-stripe capping off a festive week with a scintillating victory on the Stott. The KCOB Annual General Meeting saw the constitution of a new Executive Committee, with Mhlangenkululeko Siwisa (Finningley, 2001) elected President, and Daniel Verbaan (Finningley, 1993) Vice-President. Additionally, we welcomed Gareth Brown (Gillingham, 2014), Lucky Mshengu (Finningley, 2006), and Sandile Khumalo (Sheffield, 2009) – recognisable faces to all who frequent the Hill and look forward to working with you gentlemen. On behalf of all KCOBs, I would like to extend our sincere gratitude to Lawrence Polkinghorne (Gillingham, 1990) and Kevin Phillips (Finningley, 1986), the outgoing KCOB representative on the Board of Governors and outgoing Durban Branch Chairman respectively, for their selfless and dutiful service over the years. Wray Radford (Finningley, 1989), our outgoing President, and a Kearsney gentleman in the truest sense of the word, will not only be remembered as the second longest-serving KCOB President, but for his considered leadership in the most unprecedented of times. It speaks to Wray’s dedication that whilst handing over the Presidency, he has availed himself to serve within the Executive in an advisory role, and accepted nomination to serve on the Kearsney Board of Governors as the elected KCOB representative. Our heartfelt thanks to both you and Shannon for your continuing to lead exemplary lives of service for our fine school. With the above in mind, allow me to reserve my most significant thank you to the powerful triumvirate of Chantal Callaghan, Shantell van Jaarsveld and Monica Davidson from the KCOB Alumni and Foundation offices – the veritable true North to which we oft steer. Their effervescent enthusiasm and tireless effort continue to go above and beyond expectation and is truly appreciated. In closing, to the fine staff of Kearsney College. From those who rise in the dark still of dawn to ensure breakfast is served, and the coffee warm. To the keepers of our pristine grounds and manicured sixth-form grass. From patient Housemasters to the Sages in the classroom moulding young minds, to the Sisters in the San, the Message from the President of Kearsney College Old Boys Mhlangenkululeko Siwisa (Finningley, 2001)
