Chronicle-2023

31 Gillingham House Housemaster’s report GILLINGHAM HOUSE This year, filled with trials and tribulations, has seen the gentleman of Gillingham continuing to forge friendships, cementing the brotherhood in which values like respect, empathy, integrity and honesty were held in high regard. These values hugely contributed towards Gillingham being a place of belonging amongst its boys. This, more than any number of trophies in the cabinet, is the real measure of the House’s success to me,. The class of 2023 are commended for the way in which they presented themselves to others and, in doing so, largely contributed to the smooth running of the house, being suitable role models and a “big brother” to the juniors. Their efforts as House captains of inter-house events didn’t go unnoticed, as they persevered to the bitter end and, even though they did not attain all their goals, oftenlosing by small margins, displayed resilience and camaraderie, qualities and examples that will be much needed for the near future. To Dylan Wiggett and his team of prefects - Mike De Beer, Dominic Hislop, Chad Croshaw and Fritz Rheeder - congratulations on a House well-run and thank you for your selfless contributions, leadership, and support to all boys of Gillingham throughout the year. A word of gratitude also goes to those who represented the House in various portfolios, serving on the KCC. It’s been a tough year for the boys, trying to maintain Gillingham’s competitive edge in the interhouse competition. The boys gave a good account of themselves in all three spheres of this close competition, with very little separating first and third place apart in most cases. Congratulations to Pembroke for being victorious and being crowned the Top House of 2023, winning Academics and Sport. Several Gillingham boys have also excelled in sports and academics and a number of boys were awarded provincial colours in various codes and academic honours. Gillingham House has once again been blessed by having 10 Grade 11 boys appointed to leadership positions for 2024. We wish you all successful tenures. To Luca Borrageiro and his team of prefects, Gregor Campbell, Kyle Mackay, Cameron Veenstra, Murray Weyer and Elihle Hadebe, we look forward to working with you through 2024 and all the challenges and opportunities it will present. To those appointed as leaders for next year in the Cottage and Haley house respectively, remember, your Gillingham brothers are behind you in full support and we are sure your efforts will produce the desires outcome. 2024 will most certainly present itself with a new challenges in all spheres, may you face these with determination knowing that as a united house, a team and a brotherhood, you will overcome all obstacles and enjoy success. We are certain of your resilience and drive to, once again, be crowned the Top house on campus.
