Chronicle-2023

37 36 Haley House Head of House report At the very start of 2023, when I contemplated my year as head of Haley House, it struck me that this would be a significant year for all who occupied these walls. For the Haley House prefects and me, it would be a year filled with “lasts” and for our group of young and enthusiastic charges, a year of so many “firsts”. The significance of this contradiction was not lost on me. As a leadership team, our job would be to navigate our way through an emotional final year at an institution that has provided us with so much. We had to ensure that we absorbed every ounce from the days and experiences remaining, while at the same time being ever-mindful of guiding the newest group of Kearsney boys through, in many ways, the most testing and unsure year of their high school lives. At first, this thought was extremely daunting, but as it started to sink in, I realised that with great responsibility comes great opportunity. Opportunity to grow and nurture positive relationships and to leave a legacy that would last far beyond our days on this campus. A legacy of leading by example. One that was built on the foundations of mutual respect and not fear. Yes, we have had a few bumps in the road, but all in all, I firmly believe that as a Haley House team, us prefects and the boys of the Class of 2027 have navigated this year of “lasts” and “firsts” with a proud sense of unity. We have supported each other, laughed together, agonised together and above all else, created a brotherhood that has been a source of comfort and inspiration to our young and old housemates alike - a brotherhood which will last beyond the gates of our beloved Kearsney College. In the prefects of Haley House - Oliver Brazier; Kyle Pottinger; Ryan Denekamp, Zibusiso Ngobese; Zweli Sibanyoni and Matthew Langeland-Hansen - I found friends and confidantes. I could not have asked for a finer team to work alongside. You guys have led with humility, honesty and integrity and I wish each of you every success in your next chapter. To Mr Badenhorst, your faith in us as a prefect team has been unwavering. Thank you for your wise counsel, constant reassurance and endless patience. To Mr Zungu, Mr Ancilotti and Mr Roos, thank you for all your support, guidance and commitment to the Haley House boys. To Kearsney College, thank you for placing your trust in me and providing me with the incredible privilege of leading the next generation of Kearsney boys. The lessons in leadership and self-discovery have been invaluable. I have learnt so much more about patience, acceptance and finding humour in the little things. It has been an honour and an experience I will forever cherish. Finally, to the class of 2027, I wish you every success for the remainder of your Kearsney journey. Remember to embrace every opportunity that this great institution provides you. As with anything in life, what you put in, is what you will get out. Never stop striving for greatness.
