Chronicle-2023

41 Pembroke House Head of House report The time has finally arrived. The matrics are finishing their final examinations, the rest of the school is writing end-of-year exams, and the Grade 8s have navigated their first year at the College. When looking back on the incredible year that was 2023, I am immensely proud of the amazing young gentlemen of Pembroke House. This year’s goal was to encourage maximum participation and inclusion in every opportunity that the College provides to us gents, allowing the boys to grow and learn more about themselves and their potential. Through being true to Pembroke, each boy participated and collectively worked together to achieve the common goal of winning Top House this year. This incredible house displayed the ability to be selfless and to “take one for the team,” as evident in James Drysdale running cross-country. Pembroke House is the embodiment of perseverance, dedication and hard work. This year will certainly be remembered, as Pembroke was named Top House. Pembroke won numerous inter-house events, including a few tough ones, such as water polo, rugby and academics. The proud House of Pembroke, together with its boys in khaki shorts and green face-paint, added another year to its remarkable winning streak in tug-of-war and we trust that the boys to follow will continue this legacy by lifting that silverware high. The boys of Pembroke displayed a mature approach to each event, participating with great passion, pride and love towards our House. For that I can truly say that Pembroke is unique in the great men it produces. Pembroke is a smaller house than the others, and may sometimes be perceived as the underdog. However, this year that changed, and Pembroke was rightfully placed at the top of the leaderboard, surprising everyone except us. Winning Top House could never have been achieved alone, and many thanks go to my prefect body of Ross Philips, David Pohl, Jared Christie and Francois Snyman. These exceptional men displayed amazing leadership skills and instilled discipline in the house, whilst ensuring a welcoming and positive environment. This year Pembroke contributed eight prefects to school leadership, including two Haley prefects, Zibu Ngobese and Kyle Pottinger, and the Head of Haley house, Hayden Bishop. A special thanks to the inspiring housemaster, Mr Green, and the incredible Deputy Masters, Mr Ryan, Mr Morgan and Mr Robinson. Through your flawless efforts, Pembroke was able to achieve so much this year, and it is because of all of you that the House remained motivated and inspired throughout the year. On behalf of the House, I would like to thank you for the continuous support and effort you put into each individual. It is noticed and appreciated by the boys. The matric class of 2023 will be remembered not only for breaking Gillingham’s winning streak, but also for being encouraging, enthusiastic and highly inspiring. Thank you for being the most supportive brothers and helping the House achieve great heights. Lastly, to Connor and the 2024 prefects - stay true to yourselves and never shrink from your purpose. I trust that you will pick up from us and take the House even further into the realm of success. Trust each other, help one another and lead Pembroke to its destined place at the top. Good luck for your future endeavours and I am certainly looking forward to seeing your impact on the House. Thank you, Pembroke, the honour was mine. Siyahola Njalo Luca Veronesi Head of House
