Chronicle-2023

43 Sheffield House Housemaster’s report This year marked a new beginning for Sheffield and a new chapter in my life as Housemaster of Sheffield. I have relished the opportunity for meaningful input in the life of each boy in Sheffield and the opportunity to be part of the grand picture of this House. Life in Sheffield has its own unique rhythm to it, passed down from one year group to the next, just as our current matrics have done, and this can be sensed in the relaxed and welcoming atmosphere of the House, making it truly a “home away from home.” This year has been another busy year in the life of the College and the House. We experienced mixed successes in the inter-house competitions, with notable achievements being 1st positions in basketball, soccer and golf. Our hockey was also of a high standard, as we narrowly missed the number one spot. Our interhouse play was exceptionally written, and we clinched a close second position. Sheffield came second in the inter-house music competition as well, showcasing the amazing talent of each boy and the dedication to excel in that area. We also achieved a four-way tie in the cricket. Our focus next year is to build on a thriving academic culture in Sheffield. The Dux of the School, Anesu Chimusoro, and Liam Jansen van Rensburg, who had the second highest marks in matric, are both testament to the academic environment of Sheffield. One of the major projects in the House this year was the upgrade and refurbishment of all our bathrooms, setting a new standard for Boarding Houses. Sheffield’s motto is Deo Adjuvante Labor Proficit - which can be loosely translated as “With God’s help our labour is successful’. Our vision is for each Sheffield boy to tap into their God-given potential to grow in every respect, so that the expectancy for success drives them. Evening devotions have become an integral part of Sheffield, where the spiritual growth of our boys is paramount to the well-being of each boy. Boys are encouraged to take the lead in this important endeavour. Mr Njabulo Nkabinde joined this year as the new live-in assistant, with Mr Sanele Ngema as one of the new duty staff. Mr Senzo Mtshali has been a steady hand in the House. Together, the Sheffield duty staff have embraced and strengthened the culture of the House, adding valuable input to the lives of the Sheffield boys. The prefects of Sheffield - Siso France, Liam Jansen van Vuuren, James Gillespie and Matthew Rix, with Asande Nyawose as Head of House - have been incredible and have led the House with wisdom, passion, commitment and dedication. They are commended for this concerted effort. They have built lasting friendships in the House, leaving an indelible imprint. The prefects of 2023 have passed the baton to the new prefects of 2024, who will undoubtedly build on this fine tradition, with God spurring the House forward.
