Their results were fantastic and a testament to their diligence throughout the year. Special mention must be made of John Eastes, who was placed in the top 1%, that is, in the top 27 candidates in the country. We are immensely proud of his achievement. We are looking forward to what the Class of 2023 will achieve. This year, we entered 26 Grade 11 and 12 boys into the Proverto Accounting Olympiad. Round one was written in May and saw 15 of our boys progress to round two. Unfortunately, none of our boys were placed in the top positions, but they acquitted themselves admirably. Indigenous bookkeeping is a section of our Grade 10 syllabus. What better way to see this in action than with a walking tour through the nine informal markets, housing 6,000 informal traders, down in the Warwick Junction? The boys were led through the various markets by guides from the non-profit organisation Asiye eTafuleni. This was hugely successful and exposed the boys to the highly lucrative world of informal trading. Our aim in the accounting department is not to turn each of our students into an accountant but rather to expose them to a wide range of financial, business, entrepreneurial and critical thinking skills that will benefit them in both their personal and business capacities one day. We are delighted with the growing number of boys selecting accounting as a subject choice in Grade 10. My sincere thanks must go to Mr Steyn for his support, guidance, commitment to growing the subject and words of wisdom throughout the year. I am indeed indebted to him. Mrs Charmaine Vermeulen HOD Accounting Business Studies We have started teaching Business Studies as a subject to all our Grade 8s for the past two years, in place of Economic and Management Sciences, so that the boys get a good grounding and understanding of the subject before they choose their subjects for their Grade 10 year. This year, we took the Grade 10s, for the first time, to the markets at Warwick Junction to experience the informal sector's role in the local KZN economy. We are planning on taking the Grade 10s on an academic tour to Gauteng next year so that they are exposed to the markets in Soweto, the JSE and a few other important locations which they need to be aware of so that they see the vital role that they play in South Africa. We are moving into the Clothing Retailer as our IEB theme for the next three years and will introduce the boys to various guest speakers and visit a few local businesses in this industry so that the boys get to see how things work in reality. We hope to run multiple business seminars that will pitch things at a level required for each Grade. We bid farewell to Luke van As, an intern in our department for the past two years. He has assisted where he can and has developed into a young man who has the potential to be an outstanding schoolmaster in the future. Although we are sad to see him go, we know he will succeed at his new school. We look forward to another pleasing set of Grade 12 results in their final examinations.
