Chronicle-2023

79 Coding Club The Coding Club had an exciting and productive year, with a strong focus on hands-on learning and programming mastery. In Term 1 and 2, the club embarked on a fascinating journey by building a Robot Car powered by the BBC Micro:bit. This project provided members with valuable exposure to hardware integration and a concrete opportunity to see their code come to life in a tangible way. Students honed their skills in designing, building, and troubleshooting robotics, which was educational and fun. In the latter part of the year, the Coding Club shifted its attention towards Python programming, utilising the innovative AI tutor within the Mindjoy app. Python, a versatile and widely used programming language, provides a robust foundation for budding coders. The integration of the Mindjoy app's AI tutor allowed members to receive personalised guidance, making the learning process more engaging and efficient. The transition from physical robotics to software development showcased the club's adaptability and the versatility of its members. The AI tutor not only helped improve their coding skills but also exposed them to AI-driven educational technology, enhancing their understanding of AI's real-world applications. The Coding Club's commitment to staying at the forefront of technology and coding trends was evident in this shift. The Coding Club looks forward to the next year with excitement, ready to explore new challenges and opportunities in the world of coding. Mrs Charlene Elliott Teacher in Charge George Sykes, Grade 8, shows his newly-built robot What was formerly the Photographic Club, which had been expertly run for many years by Tracey van den Aardweg, morphed into Content Creators in 2023 as I took over its running. In the rapidly advancing tech and media space, the opportunity existed for the club to continue to fulfil the role of developing photographic skills, but also to explore other forms of content creation, such as podcasts, video recording, and social media content. Over the course of the year, a core group of Content Creators emerged and had it not been for their enthusiasm, moving in a new and exciting direction with the club would not have been possible. Liam Calenborne took on the position of chairman of the club, ably assisted by Caden Moodley as his deputy. Luke Hollins was another core member of the club, bringing his vast knowledge of tech setup to the table, and he could often be seen assisting in the background with school productions and events. Jack Sternberg led the charge from the junior boys and showed commitment to learning how to take photos at various events. Another achievement this year, a year in which we charted the path for the future of the club, was to create a recording and creative space in the media centre. Although this was not completed, it served as a proof of concept and highlighted the resourcefulness of the boys involved in the process. It is with great excitement that we have welcomed Mrs Hayley de Marigny into the fold as the newly-appointed Media Centre Manager. Hayley brings wonderful energy and enthusiasm and vast experience in the realm of content creation, having worked on projects for, amongst other platforms, National Geographic and Animal Planet. As a club, we look forward with great excitement to 2024, which will undoubtedly present further opportunities for creativity and skills development that can only serve our boys well as 21st-century digital citizens.
