80 Foundations for Success The Dale Carnegie Generation.Next training, specifically designed to meet the challenges and developmental needs of 17- to 20-year-olds, focuses on skills for future success, showing youngsters how to “tap into the best parts of themselves to create positive change”. Dale Carnegie courses have been presented internationally for 111 years and remain one of the definitive internationally-recognised courses in selfdevelopment. Kearsney College prides itself in the long-standing relationship that we have enjoyed with the programme. Between 2003 and 2023 there have been 42 Dale Carnegie Generation.Next courses held at Kearsney College and over 1000 of our boys have earned the coveted Dale Carnegie certificate. This year more than half of the Kearsney Grade 11s participated in the course. Dedication and perseverance were two necessary values needed to complete the eight modules over the term. These eight modules were created with Dale Carnegie’s values and practices promoted in his famous books, such as How to Win Friends and Influence People and How to Stop Worrying and Start Living. Each student received a manual and a tiny “Golden Book” with the different principles needed to become a leader and a person with ingrained successoriented values. The Grade 11s were challenged by their facilitator, Mrs Goodwin, weekly. This was necessary to gain deeper insight into who each of these individuals are. The students were allowed to be open and honest and to reach a level of understanding of each other and their differences. The recipients of the highest award, as voted on by their peers, were Bryce Blomquist (Term 1) and Callum Steer (Term 3). They were recognised for the following: This individual is someone whose audio is in line with his video – someone who walks the talk of the Dale Carnegie principles. This young man is always prepared for every lesson, applies the Human Relations principles, and has allowed growth within to lead with integrity. This young man is a team player who constantly encourages his team. He did not hold back when it came to absorbing the Dale Carnegie content and presented with conviction and passion. The different skills that he has acquired are effective communication skills, listening with understanding, leadership skills, the value of team effectiveness versus personal advantage, people skills and the ability to contribute to an atmosphere of Trust, emotional awareness, and intelligence. In closing, Dale Carnegie said that “most of us have far more courage than we ever dreamed possible”. The Dale Carnegie Grade 11 participants showed not only courage throughout the eight weeks, but also the dedication and will to be better and become the leaders they are destined to be. While the weather may have posed some challenges during our first hike, it only added to the thrill of the journey. Our second hike tested our physical and mental limits but rewarded us with extraordinary vistas and a profound sense of accomplishment. Our first hike of the year took us from the picturesque Drakensberg Peaks camp to Ikabana Berghuisie. Unfortunately, the weather didn't play along, and we had to adapt our route due to heavy rain. This unexpected change, however, added a unique and exciting twist to our adventure. As we trekked through the Drakensberg's central mountains, we couldn't help but stand in awe of the rugged landscapes surrounding us. The rain enhanced the beauty of the area, creating waterfalls and lush greenery. Enduring the wet conditions, the boys showed their resilience, cooking their meals in the great outdoors and staying positive and enthusiastic. One of the standout memories of this hike was the impromptu touch rugby game we played in the rain. It was a moment of pure joy and camaraderie as we dashed through the mud, chasing the ball. The laughter and team spirit shared will be fondly remembered by all. Our second hike of the year, which took place during the third term, was a more challenging but equally rewarding experience. We embarked on a journey from Monks Cowl campsite to Zulu Cave, testing our grit and determination along the way. This hike offered breathtaking scenic views that seemed to stretch on forever. The feeling of accomplishment and awe at the natural beauty surrounding us made up for the tired legs and occasional discomfort. The serenity of the Zulu Cave, nestled in the heart of the Drakensberg, provided a unique opportunity for our members to connect with nature and reflect on the beauty of the world. We're thrilled with our experiences in nature this year and are already looking forward to the next adventure. The Hiking Club continues to be a platform for exploration, bonding and the creation of lasting memories in the great outdoors. I would like to express my gratitude to all the participants for their enthusiasm and dedication to the Hiking Club. Special thanks to Mr Kemp and Mr Gordon for assisting me on these hikes and for ensuring the safety of the boys. Mr Mouton Badenhorst Teacher in Charge Hiking Club
