Chronicle-2023

89 88 My sentiments about managing the Speakers’ and Inner Circles are perfectly captured by Julia Ovenden, who said: What I enjoy is collaboration. Working with other like-minded people. People who have brilliant minds and big hearts. This sums up the speakers’ attitudes and approach to public speaking, and I could not be prouder of each member of these very special societies. Connor Grenfell most capably and confidently chaired the Speakers’ Circle, proving to be an exemplary leader and role model for delivering a thought-provoking prepared speech. The Grade 10s were excellent mentors to the extremely capable Grade 9s, who impressed me with their exceptional speaking ability and desire to get involved. I have no doubt that they will set a fine example to the Grade 8s joining us next year. The Inner Circle hosted a formal dinner with Our Lady of Fatima’s public speaking society this year, with the staff adjudicating. I commend each speaker who rose to the challenge and produced such interesting and profound commentary around the themes of each evening. Sheyn le Roux, who was also appointed as the Chairman of the Speakers’ Circle in his Grade 10 year, chaired the dinners confidently and charismatically this year. It was a delight to watch him develop in confidence and entertain the audience so capably. The Inter-house Public Speaking event held in Term 3 is always a hotly-contested evening – amongst staff and boys alike - and this year did not disappoint, with Gillingham raising the Golden Mic trophy for the second consecutive year. This year our Grade 11 and Grade 12 speakers were given the opportunity to enter the South African Literacy Association Competition (Public Speaking division), an online competition entered by over 250 entrants nationwide. Five of our boys – Bonga Mbhele, Liam Jansen van Rensburg, Matthew Lamplough, Elihle Hadebe and Sethu Magubane - qualified for the semi-final round, with Public Speaking Societies Sethu going through to the finals. The results are to be announced later this year. The following boys are congratulated for being awarded Half-Colours for Public Speaking: Seth Abrahams, Zweli Sibanyoni, Hayden Davel, Devahn van der Walt and Sheyn le Roux Congratulations to the following boys who were awarded Colours for Public Speaking by winning two major categories over the past two years: Sim Mkhize, Liam Jansen van Rensburg, Bonga Mbhele and Ryan Denekamp - The dinners held in the Greyhound are the highlight of each term – with the delicious food contributing enormously to a wonderful evening– and my gratitude is extended to Sigrid Ceronio, Justin de Beer, Empact, Fiona Prinsloo and Sharon Mohan for the catering and décor provided for our formal dinners. They selflessly ensure that our evenings are of the highest calibre and are so appreciated by the boys, staff and parents who attend the end-of-year prize-giving dinners.
