Chronicle-2021

70 The Chronicle 2021 Commerce Accounting ‘The only constant in life is change’ Heraclitus This quotation from Heraclitus certainly sums up 2021, with the COVID-19 pandemic putting paid to many scheduled events, like the Johannesburg School of Finance simulation game, the Businessman of the Year dinner and the Accounting Olympiad. Much curriculum manipulation and reshuffling was undertaken to accommodate the online and in-person teaching models. Teaching Accounting online certainly requires a great deal of innovation and creativity! We are proud of how admirably the Class of 2021 acquitted themselves in the IEB final examinations. The results are summarised at the start of this academic chapter. Whilst we acknowledge that this is important to train and strategise for the final IEB examination, we expose the boys to an array of financial, business, and entrepreneurial skills that will be beneficial to them in both their personal and, one day, business capacities. The College sees a healthy number of the boys embark on tertiary studies in the commercial fields. Our traditional entrepreneurial project was adapted this year to include 21st century skills and problembased learning. The project required the Grade 9 boys to formulate a ‘real-world’ problem aligned to The Global Goals for Sustainable Development, and to come up with a feasible business solution that would aid in solving this problem either fully or in part. The sustainability goals seek to promote peace, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all. The question posed to the Grade 9s was, “What business can you (as a young person) create today to build a better tomorrow?” Although this project took the boys out of their comfort zones, there certainly were some very innovative and creative solutions that have the potential to be developed into viable business ideas at a later stage. This, being my first year here at Kearsney, I would like to offer a special word of thanks to my colleagues, Messrs Barend Steyn, Steven Edwards and Wayne Marsden for their support, words of wisdom and guidance throughout the year. I am indeed indebted to them. Mrs Charmaine Vermeulen HOD Accounting Business Studies This year saw the continued growth of Business Studies as a subject, with 59 boys choosing it in Grade 10 for a Matric subject. This year we discussed the impact that the looting and rioting, which took place in South Africa, had on businesses, communities and our economy, with particular reference to the retail industry, as this was the IEB theme. Mr Wayne Marsden HOD Business Studies “Business Studies has easily been one of the most valuable subjects I've taken at Kearsney. It is so broad that it gives you a good understanding of the business environment, but it also goes into enough depth to give you real insight into each part of a business's workings. It has been important to me as it gave me the tools I needed to grow my own start-up business. I am often able to put theory into practice, and my textbook is my go-to manual in a lot of my decision-making. Business Studies has set me up well for a career in business and I would highly recommend any aspiring entrepreneurs to take the subject.” Matthew Jacobs – Grade 12 2021 “Business Studies is a very valuable subject to take as students are equipped with skills and abilities that are necessary in preparing us to succeed in any professional environment. The combination of exceptional teachers and a curriculum which focuses on a multitude of different current business situations and developments is the key which has opened the door in creating entrepreneurs of the future who are resilient opportunists, intelligent and capable of adapting to today's dynamic markets.” Gontse Machaba – Grade 12 2021 ‘ ‘ YOUR WALK-IN LAB Providing Health and Wellness Testing Sexually Transmitted Infections DNA Paternity Drugs of Abuse COVID-19 General Health We congratulate Kearsney on its centenary year and thank the teachers, past and present, for the boys that they have nurtured and educated.
