Chronicle-2021

74 The Chronicle 2021 This year 20 boys from Grade 10 to Grade 12 studied Music as a subject. It is wonderful to see continued interest in the academic side of music. COVID restrictions meant there was little opportunity for many memorable performances. However, we gave extra focus to the written, theoretical aspects of the subject. Students develop their musical skills in all aspects, with the focus being on music theory, music history and the practical instrument of their choice (ranging from violin and saxophone to classical and pop voice). Boys have shown a lot of resilience this year, with a great deal of self-discipline in preparing practical elements without the goal of any performance. As always there was an emphasis placed on composition and music technology. This year, our recording studio continued to play a vital role in the department as it was used for numerous virtual recordings. The students taking subject music are fortunate to have access to this facility and the syllabus has been redesigned to include formal music production lessons, following the groundbreaking Rockschool Music Production graded syllabus. I am proud of the attitude that the boys had during this trying time, and I look forward to watching them come alive on stage again as soon as all restrictions have been lifted. Brett Alborough HOD Music As the year draws to a close and the finalities of the Matric practical examination and exhibition are realised, it feels like time has flown. The year passed in a frantic blur of hybrid teaching and new territory practical exams. It feels like, in a world that is chaotic and disrupted, Art provides a platform for conscious reflection. These new-found realities and experiences are dealt with in a myriad of different reflections through the work produced this year. Although still restricted in some areas of practice we have tried to make the ways of working diverse and to continue to challenge the boys in their skill development. We miss the gallery visits and the chances to share exhibition openings, but these times will happen again. The Grade 10s and a select number of Grade 11 boys participated in the Reddam Drawing competition this year. It was exciting to see their submissions alongside their peers work from all over KZN and providing a strong representation from the College. Congratulations to the Matric Class of 2021. They navigated a restricted environment and tackled an entirely new practical exam format positively. They are commended on their tenacity and drive, excelling in multiple areas of art practice and constantly striving for their best. I wish them well for 2022 and look forward to seeing where their futures lead them.
