Chronicle-2021

87 Centenary Edition This year will be remembered as a year of great obstacles and barriers which threatened the very existence of our beloved choir. The ongoing global pandemic resulted in extreme measures implemented by the government, which severely compromised the way in which choirs could operate. Communal singing was deemed a high-risk activity, due to the increased amounts of aerosols, given that most choirs rehearse indoors for extended periods. The onset of the pandemic in 2020 meant that choral activities had to cease in March 2020, and all hope was placed on the year 2021 to restore things to normal. However, this was not the case, and the choir was not allowed to rehearse or perform until mid-April, when restrictions were finally eased. Our excitement at the prospect of resuming choral activities was of short-lived, since the onset of the third wave in May meant that rehearsals were once again prohibited. Term 3 brought a measure of hope, since the national infection rate decreased and the revised National Disaster Management Act permitted choir rehearsals. Term 3 at Kearsney College is usually dedicated to our Culture@Kearsney Choir Festival and the Inter-house Music Competition. Unfortunately, the choir festival was cancelled due to the visiting choirs not being able to prepare adequately, but our Inter-house Competition was set to continue, albeit in a virtual format. Due to a significant spike in positive cases at our school towards the end of the term, the Inter-house Music Competition was cancelled a week before the event was due to take place. It was a great pity that our dedicated and enthusiastic House choirs did not get an opportunity to showcase their hard work and talents.
