Chronicle-2021

Athletics INTER-HOUSE ATHLETICS Term 2 Due to the cancellation of contact sport during the second term, it was decided to have the Interhouse Athletics meet earlier in the year. The 2021 Inter-house Athletics was held over nine days, starting on Monday 07 June, and finishing the following Wednesday, 16 June. To encourage wide participation athletes could earn points for their Houses by finishing in the top 8 (as has traditionally been the case) or by meeting a minimum standard per event. This meant that more than the traditional two athletes per event could earn points for their respective Houses. Each afternoon from 07 June to 11 June saw athletes running heats or involved in field events and “Finals” for the shorter distance track events on Saturday 12 June. The following week, Monday 14 to Wednesday 16 June, saw the running of the longer distance events. Also breaking from tradition, the Inter-house tug-of-war was contested by all five age groups in teams of 4 rather than 8 (to comply with social distancing practices). All results contributed to competition for the Hall Trophy. Semi-finals for the 5 age groups were held on Thursday 10 and Friday 11 June with the finals taking place on Saturday 12 June after the finals of the track events. Once all placings were taken in for each age group, Pembroke ran out as winners of the Inter-house tug-of-war competition, extending their winning streak by another year. Gillingham, with a greater number of top-end athletes (as evidenced by the number of age group winners from that House) and more depth, were the eventual winners of the Inter-house Athletics competition.
