Chronicle-2021

99 98 The Chronicle 2021 Centenary Edition Sports overview Sport at Kearsney College this year was built on the foundation of resilience as the COVID-19 virus was still rampant throughout 2021. With that being said, I have the utmost admiration for how the boys responded in the face of adversity. With fixtures against opposing schools becoming non-existent in large parts of the year, our pupils stood up to the challenge and forged ahead with positivity and toughness. Sport at Kearsney College continued to shine brightly despite the hindrances along the way. Interhouse competition provided great camaraderie for our boys and they participated with enthusiasm. Term 3 began with the anticipation that sport would resume unabated, which meant rugby sevens, soccer and indoor hockey could begin. Soccer and rugby sevens had notable seasons. Our 1st soccer team had memorable victories in severe weather conditions against Durban High School (DHS) and Westville Boys’ High School. The soccer season was a massive success overall with all our students competing over six weeks and thoroughly enjoying matches against other schools. Kearsney hosted three consecutive Rugby Sevens festivals on the Stott. Our 1st team won seven out of their eight fixtures, which was a remarkable feat. The fractured seasons of sport meant we had many students that could not gain representation in provincial teams. The sportsmen who were afforded the chance to compete for higher honours took their opportunity. Eighteen boys were chosen for provincial teams in 2021 and a further three made provincial teams for sports not offered at Kearsney College. Development of facilities The cricket hut on Matterson, near the tennis courts, was upgraded, creating a fully enclosed venue. Upgrades to our High Performance Centre are ongoing and will continue in 2022. Approval has been given for new basketball courts to be constructed in 2022. I extend a heartfelt thank you to the various stakeholders who assisted in creating a successful sporting year at Kearsney College. We are grateful for all your hard work over the course of the year. I also thank our magnificent parents, Old Boys, and supporters for their steadfast and unrivalled support. We look ahead to 2022 with great confidence and enthusiasm.
