115 Centenary Edition 114 The Chronicle 2021 1st XI Cricket Other players who represented the 1st XI: Matthew Bergset, Ross Coetzee, Otsile Ntsele, Fritz Rheeder, Tristan Roos, Aryan Sewsunker, Jayce van Eeden, Dylan Wiggett, Adam Zeiler After the heady heights of finishing fourth in the National T20 competition and second in the schoolboy rankings in the country in 2020, harsh reality reared its ugly head. This year did not get off to the desired positive start, with cricketers confined to inter-house cricket in the 1st term due to COVID-19 restrictions. House matches are not for the cricketing connoisseur, as they do not promote skilful batting or bowling. As such, they directly influence performances in the longer form of the game. However, all had fun, which was important at that time. Mass participation was the key to keeping our cricketing fraternity happy. The season proved to be challenging. The 1st team was composed of a nursery of young players and seasoned but out-of-form Matrics. For whatever reason, we could not get the team to gel. Our batting displays were characterised by singular brilliant knocks and spectacular batting collapses. We held our own in the bowling department and our fielding endeavours, but once the Matrics had departed to fulfil their academic needs, it was boys against men. We had Grade 10 boys manfully facing grizzled eighteen-year-olds bowling at express speeds and powerful batsmen dispatching careless bowling to the furthest corners of our beloved A H Smith Oval. However, the future looks very positive. These young men learned valuable lessons through the hardships of this season. They will have steeled their resolve to be better in every discipline that this fine game demands. The boys showed passion and grit despite facing formidable opposition, which will stand them in good stead. Talent is evident in the side and will challenge opposition teams as they mature. Highlights of the season must surely be the wins against Jeppe and Westville Boys’ High in the season’s final game. Outstanding batting and bowling displays by certain players also bode well for the future.
