Chronicle-2021

117 Centenary Edition My thanks go to coach Mr Jordan Gregory for his tireless energy and the expertise he brings to the game. He and coaches Mr Mthokozisi Shezi, Mr Khaya Zondo and Mr Mangaliso Motshele certainly brought a new dimension to the coaching our boys received. Thanks too must go to Mr Peter Kirsten, our statistician and co-coach, for the hours he meticulously puts into the side and his passion for the game. I want to thank our parent body for their support in a challenging year with few positive results. Restrictions meant they also had minimal opportunities to watch their sons play. Their patience and understanding for a work in progress are greatly appreciated. I would especially like to thank Mr Neil Peacock, who retires as MIC of Cricket after fifteen years of dedicated service. He is a passionate cricketing man. His efficiency and selfless service were commendable and greatly appreciated by the cricketing fraternity. Summary of results: Played 13, Won 4, Lost 8, No result 1 Mr André van Zyl Coach 2nd XI Cricket Regular players: Matthew Bergset, Rhys Calenborne, Ethan Groom, Dominic Hislop, Ethan McCormick, Callum McKeown, Jacques Minnaar, Otsile Ntsele, Brett Parkinson, Ross Phillips, Fritz Rheeder, Andrew Roden, Tristan Roos, Aryan Sewsunker, Devahn van der Walt The 2nd team of 2021 was a rotating cast, and this lack of stability often hindered performance. Whether it was injury or having to isolate, it was never easy to practie with a full complement or even the same group of players from session to session. However, once players could take on specific roles and responsibilities, the team made progress. Unfortunately, this came towards the end of the short season. The first match was at home against Hilton, and Kearsney posted a par score of 142 in a shortened 30 over fixture on a small field. The team was unprepared for the onslaught from an attacking and ruthless Hilton side who knocked the runs off in 15 overs for the loss of 2 wickets. The following Saturday saw the 2nd XI take on Glenwood in a 50 over game. Putting Glenwood in to bat, Kearsney restricted the opposition to under 150. In the chase, Kearsney were 35 without loss after 7 overs before rain ended proceedings. Carrying the positive momentum into a mid-week T20 fixture against Reddam Umhlanga, Kearsney posted a score of 198/3, Adam Zeiler scoring 53 (21) and Matthew Bergset scoring 61*(35). Reddam was dismissed for 104 as the light began to fade. Although the Kearsney 2nd XI registered a sizeable victory, the bowling was not as tight as it should have been. The team was disrupted by call-ups to the 1st XI and COVID isolation. The match against Maritzburg College on Goldstones that followed was an ordeal. College, who elected to bat, posted a massive 400/3, with two batsmen registering more than 100 runs. Kearsney tried to dig in to keep the opposition in the field for as long as possible and were finally dismissed in the 40th over for just short of 200 runs. The next fixture again saw some significant changes in the team’s composition for various reasons, but the performance against Michaelhouse, albeit a reasonably convincing loss, showed considerable improvement and a good attitude on the field. Otsile Ntsele scored a chanceless 68 before being run out. Unfortunately, Kearsney lost by 6 wickets, with the rain forecast for earlier in the day coming down as soon as Michaelhouse had hit the winning runs. The season’s final fixture, a T20 against Westville Boys’ High, came in the middle of the boys’ exams. On the AH Smith, Oval Kearsney scratched to a below-par total of 110, probably 30 runs short of a competitive total. Nonetheless, Kearsney was able to take the game to the final ball and, needing a single to tie the scores on the last ball, the Westville number 8 batsmen smashed a four. However heart-breaking this loss was, the team demonstrated the guts and determination that we coaches want to see. So, it was a season of pain, but one in which the players learnt a great deal and were beginning to find an upward trajectory. In 2022 the players will have more defined roles and be able to show what they are made of. Results: Played 5, Won 1, Lost 3, No result 1 Mr Jon Robinson and Mr Matt Saville Coaches 3rd XI Cricket Regular players: Troy Dyer, Matthew Gray (Captain), Dominic Hislop, Ethan Hughes, Carl Knoblauch, MJ Mcengwa, Harvey Millard, Javhar Naidoo, Heath Rocher, Tiaan Steyn, David Willington and Josh Woolven The 3rd XI of 2021 displayed a lot of talent, with boys bidding for possible 2nd XI and 1st XI berths in the future. Their dedication often saw them putting in more hours than the scheduled practice times permitted. As coaches, we admired then for their motivated approach to the game. Due to COVID-19 the boys sadly only played 5 matches this year. They won two of their five matches. They were very competitive in their other three matches, and although they lost, the games were only decided in the last 2 overs of those matches. There were several notable performances, with top batting from Josh Woolven, who scored two fifties. Harvey Millard was promoted to the thirds and scored a very good 54 not out, against Westville. Special mention to the only matric in the team, David Willington, who showed great character in supporting the team and the College right to the end. A true team man. A big thank you to Mr Kyle Eysele for his endless energy and enthusiasm. I wish him all the best for the future. Results: Played 5, Won 2, Lost 3 Mr Hubert van Ellewee and Mr Kyle Eysele Coaches 4th XI Cricket Regular players: Nicholas Butler, Jarred Christie, Enzo Cocciante, Reuel Jagarnath, Luc-Michael Jonker, Tom Larson, Brandon McCrae, Connor McGill, Harvey Millard, Kieran Pearton, Kyle Pottinger, Ayabukwa Skweyiya, Tiaan Snyman, Roderick Tayler, Ryan Taylor, Liam Theunissen The cricket season during the fourth term started with great excitement and enthusiasm. The players were keen to dust off their cricket kits and prove their metal against old rivals after inter-school matches were allowed to resume under strict COVID-19 protocols. The 4th Cricket team was a young side, consisting mainly of Grade 10 boys who were eager to hone their skills at practices and during matches. The first match of the season was against Hilton College at home on the Silcock Field. Kearsney won the toss and elected to bat first. Harvey Millard (37 not out) and Brandon McCrae (38 not out) cemented a promising partnership of 62 runs. Kearsney scored 107 runs for the loss of one wicket in their allotted 20 overs. Hilton batted next and their opening batsmen proved too strong for our bowling attack. Hilton College ended their innings on 108 runs for the loss of one wicket. Kearsney lost the match by 9 wickets. Unfortunately, our game against Glenwood High School had to be cancelled due to too many COVID-19 cases and close contacts within the team. All was not lost, and the boys returned to training with vigour and up for the next match against Maritzburg College at Martizburg Collegians. The toss favoured the Kearsney side and College was sent into bat first. The College batsmen started their innings slowly and then upped the run rate which put our bowlers and fielders under pressure. Luc-Michael Jonker, Harvey Millard and Ryan The 1st XI played 3 T20 matches against the KCOB “Old Cricks”, winning one of these.
