Although many of the boys at the College have taken up golf during the COVID-19 pandemic, we were not able to play in many inter-school fixtures for a number of reasons. During the 2nd Term there was a KZN Southern Coastal event at Durban Country Club. This event allowed us to select boys to Southern Coastal teams in case we needed to select a KZN team later in the year. In very challenging conditions our boys faired well, with Julian Daws and Kai Hielckert making the A side and Matthew Gouws, Reece Brown and Judah Gibson making the B side. Both Matthew Crookes and Paul Swanepoel did well in the conditions and just missed out on selection. This certainly gave the players some motivation to work hard for the remainder of the year. The Term 3 saw COVID playing its part once again and no fixtures were played. Michaelhouse hosted a festival at the end of the term where three coastal schools played against three Midlands’ schools in a Ryder Cup format over four days. The team who represented the College enjoyed the format and the competition was really tough. Julian Daws (Grade 11 came first in the Strokeplay event and showed he was going to be a force at the KZN Championships in Term 4. The KZN Championships had been postponed, due the unrest in KZN in July, and was played at Kloof Country Club early in Term 4. The field was really strong, and conditions were perfect for the 36-hole event. Julian Daws fought back from a 1 shot deficit in Round 1 to tie for the lead after 36 holes and went on to win the first play-off hole. His hours of hard work and dedication had paid off. Mention must be of Matthew Gouws (Grade 8) who tied for 9th place, showing that his result at the Southern Coastal event was no fluke. Paul Swanepoel also played well to finish tied for 13th. The boys really shone in the team event, coming 2nd to Westville Boys’ High by 11 shots. It was some of the best scoring for a Kearsney team in many years, and we beat Hilton College, who finished 3rd, by 26 shots. This team are all back next year and have shown that they will be contenders to take the title. Mr Wayne Marsden remains an ever-reliable 2nd Team manager and is a great help in ensuring golf is run efficiently. Sadly, we said goodbye to Mr Marco Botha, who left to teach overseas. His help with golf over the years, and love of the game, will be missed. I hope 2022 will allow our wonderful players to shine and get the credit they deserve for the hours they spend practising their game.
