Chronicle-2021

131 130 The Chronicle 2021 Centenary Edition used their experience to lead the team exceptionally well. Menzi Mhlungu was our captain and led from the front in every aspect. The boys respected him highly, and he got the most out of them. Unfortunately, Calvin Davis was injured early in the preseason tournament but came on as our defensive coach. He was at every training session, ensuring the defence improved each game. Finally, thanks to Campbell Duckworth for his determination. He is a player the team could always rely on to up the tempo and change the game. He has tremendous talent and always lets his hockey do the talking. I was extremely proud of this team and its achievements this season. COVID made things challenging, and yet the boys always found ways to improve, look at the positives and learn from their mistakes. These young men may not realise it yet, but they have had a significant impact on the future of their school’s hockey. Huge thanks go to Greg Thomson for organising fixtures and tournaments with very little notice and testing times. Also, to Wayne Marsden for all the time and effort put into managing the team. Our first outing was at a triangular with Hilton College and St Charles College. Although there were many positives to take out of the games, we lost 0-2 to Hilton and drew 3-3 with St Charles. The following weekend the team drew 2-2 with Michaelhouse at home in a highly competitive fixture. The only other game of the season was a friendly against Northwood which ended in and exciting 1-1 draw. With the season curtailed due to COVID restrictions, the players had to accept not being able to compete further. I thank the boys for their camaraderie and positive contributions to our short season and wish them well for the future. Results: Played 4, Lost 1, Drew 3 Mr Marco Botha Coach 3rd Team Hockey Regular players: Jordan Balkisson, Zach Barrett, Enzo Cocciante, Judah Gibson, Amile Gumbi, Ben Hanger, Dylan Jewitt, Ite Machobane, Kabo Madi, Benjamin Oellermann, Dylan Olivier, Owen Payne, Benjamin Robertson, Cayson Saunders, Matthew Smith A somewhat fractured season began with trials and a practice, then straight into a match against a strong St Charles College side, which we lost 5-1. However, despite the disastrous result, the team settled quickly, displaying a strong sense of tenacity and competitive drive. This was the season’s theme, with a fluid side meaning the dynamics changed throughout. It was fantastic to see the team enjoying each match and giving their all. Despite not winning a match, the two stand out matches were against Hilton and Westville, both returning 0- 1 results. Thank you to all involved for an enjoyable season. Results: Played 5, Won 0, Lost 5 Mr Dougan Macdonald Coach 1st Team Hockey The 2021 season was very disjointed due to the COVID pandemic. Preseason was tough as no contact was allowed, so we focused on developing the teams’ individual skills. We ensured our attacking short corners were well drilled and an attacking threat for our season ahead. Our team focused on remaining positive and training as best we could within the regulations. Although we could not have an entire season, we were lucky to have a preseason festival and three regular fixtures- against St Charles College, Northwood and Hilton College. A defining characteristic of our season was a culture where the senior boys ensured that any junior playing in the team could do so with flair and confidence. This culture will contribute to significant success for many years to come. In addition, this was an extremely tight unit that played for each other and their school. Some of the season’s highlights were superb victories against St Charles and a well-drilled DHS side. Another highlight was the incredible hockey played against Northwood away. The boys had worked extremely hard leading up to the game and really wanted to put out a top-quality performance. They did just that, and won 3-0. With the 2021 season being cancelled due to the pandemic, I must mention the following boys who 1st XI’s Bryce Wiggett
