Last year, our focus was trying to move into space and anticipate a pass. Additional skills we picked up this year were, looking to pass the ball to team members, proactive tackling, turning with the ball and driving with the ball. This resulted in scoring some goals. Even though we did not win our games, the team played exceptionally well and gave their best. I was particularly proud of how they represented the school. The camaraderie, unselfishness and level of confidence were tremendous. It is a pity that I will not be coaching these boys next year, but I really enjoyed working with these young men. There was much banter and laughter in the team. We truly appreciate the parents’ support. Thank you to our goalkeeper Jordan Balkisson for saving us on numerous occasions. Cameron Fenton controlled the middle of the park and combined superbly with Zach Barrett and Michael Kiggen. A big thumbs up to Amile Gumbi for leading the striker. We thank captain fantastic Campbell Davison- a passionate and committed player who gave everything for his team and was not afraid to take on extra responsibilities to assist. In their quiet and steadfast manner, Jack Murray and William Stanton read the game well and intercepted good crosses that posed a danger to our defence. Mr Manzini Zungu Coach Under 16A Hockey The U16A hockey side enjoyed a limited but intense season. The team had an excellent balance between Grade 9 and 10 boys, who seemed to gel immediately. This group of boys were always hungry for advice and absorbed information. They worked hard in the gym, even after the season was halted due to COVID-19 restrictions. The side demonstrated a tenacious attitude on the field of play, but the boys were humble off the field. The team spirit was never questioned, and each player gave a good account of themselves when called upon to do so. The team enjoyed some excellent banter amongst themselves. No one, including the coaching staff, was saved during these sessions. Still, it was in the right spirit, solidifying the bond between the boys. It is always tough to highlight individual players, especially when the side is such a close-knit group. However, Dylan Wiggett and Anesu Chimusoro did an excellent job as Captain and Vice-captain, keeping the boys focused on the team goals and individual ones. A definite highlight of the brief season was the number of clean sheets achieved and the number of goals scored. The team achieved six clean sheets in their nine matches and scored 26 goals, averaging nearly three per match. These achievements were not based on individual performances but on team effort. It was such a pity that the season was cut short and that provincial teams were not selected. I am positive that Kearsney would have had many representatives on the sides. The players gave 100%. They enjoyed their practices and demonstrated passion for their school and fellow players whilst on the turf. Hockey will continue to flourish if the boys demonstrate the type of attitude they showed in 2021. A big thank you goes to Mr Greg Thomson, as Manager / Assistant Coach of the side. He provided excellent advice at practices and during games. I also take this opportunity to thank all the players for such a memorable season. It was a short but rewarding one.
