137 136 The Chronicle 2021 Centenary Edition Under 14A Hockey Regular players: Nic Comrie, Jason de Gryse, Matthew Gouws, Oliver Gray, Sipho Majiza, Nicholas Munro, Tristan Smith, William Smith, Joel Steyn, Matthew Terblanche, Rory Treleaven, Cole Young, Joe Roylance, Hayden Dunsdon When the COVID restrictions prohibiting the playing of sport for most of 2020 were lifted, things looked hopeful for the resumption of hockey in 2021. COVID protocols meant screening before practices and matches, and sadly no spectators were allowed. The team was invited to play in a pre-season festival hosted by Northwood. The players either stayed with their parents or in boarding and travelled to Northwood daily. The festival proved invaluable for Jethro and me as we were able to get boys to play in positions they were not accustomed to and to get the 13 players to gel into a unit. In our first match, the team came back from 3–1 down to Northwood to draw the match 3-3. Then, we beat Westville 2- 0 in the afternoon to end a successful day. Apart from a narrow 2- 1 loss against a strong DHS team, we won the remainder of our matches: 2- 0 vs Michaelhouse and 3- 0 vs Glenwood. The team was able to play another four matches in Term 2 before new COVID regulations put a disappointing end to the season. The team beat St Charles and Michaelhouse (again) and, in a better performance, beat Northwood 1- 0 in a rematch. The season’s disappointment was a 1- 0 loss to Hilton, where the team dominated but could not put the ball in the back of the net. Special mention should be made of Cole Young, who scored 11 goals in 9 matches during the season. The players in our defensive unit (Joe Roylance in goals, Jason de Gryse, Nicholas Comrie and Nicholas Munro) also deserve special mention as they were always calm under pressure and made it very difficult for teams to score against us. It was a privilege for the team to be coached by Jethro Eustice, who captained the SA Men’s Indoor Hockey team and represented South Africa in the Tokyo Olympics. All the boys benefitted from his passion, knowledge of the game and patience. His coaching methods and ability to get the best out of the players were outstanding. What Jethro achieved in the team and the players in a truncated season will stand Kearsney Hockey in good stead for the future. Provincial selections: Congratulations to Matthew Terblanche, Joel Steyn, Cole Young, Sipho Majiza and Tristan Smith were selected for the KZN U14 Coastal squad. Just as the season was starting to unfold, renewed and more stringent lock down regulations put pay to most of the season. This was a great pity as the team was just developing into a unit, committed to playing good, constructive hockey. While the results might not show it, there was a definite improvement as the short season progressed. Riley Nadauld, as captain, always led from the front. His efforts saw him being promoted to the A-side towards the end of the shortened season. As the keeper, Hayden Dunsdon blossomed, and some of his saves enabled the team to stay in the game on occasion. The improvement over the season was gratifying to note, and the Back row (L-R): Matthew Terblanche, William Smith, Cole Young, Nicholas Munro Seated: Sipho Majiza, Joe Roylance, Joel Steyn, Mr Peter Kirsten (Manager), Oliver Gray, Nic Comrie Absent: Jason de Gryse, Matthew Gouws, Rory Treleaven HOCKEY UNDER 14A TEAM courageous attitude of the team against solid opposition was most encouraging. The players were always keen and committed at practice sessions and were extremely disappointed when the season abruptly curtailed.
