However, with the revised regulations in place in Term 3, water polo players had the opportunity to showcase their talents again. In Term 3, new energy arrived on the Kearsney water polo scene with the addition of Mr Pierre Le Roux to the teaching staff. We are working towards what could be some of the best years that water polo at the College has experienced. The 1st team struggled with their form in their opening tournaments and fixtures. However, the team performed well at the Northwood Stayers’ Tournament at the end of the season, reaching the semi-final. Special mention should be made of the Under 14 team, which reached the final at both the Hilton College Festival and the Top 10 Tournament. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the following people for their support: National and provincial water polo selections SA U17 Water Polo Congratulations to Dimitri Diakogiannis (goalkeeper) who has been selected as a non-travelling reserve for the SA U17 Water Polo Team. KZN Water polo selections The following boys are congratulated for being selected for KZN water polo teams for the IPT in Cape Town from 15 to 19 December: U14: Luca Sandri, Owethu Mayekiso (non-travelling reserve), James Pohl, Tristan Uys; U15: Blake Kruger (non-travelling reserve); U19: Dimitri Diakogiannis (non-travelling reserve). Kearsney coach, Mr Pierre Le Roux, will be coaching the KZN U14 Boys’ team. Inter-house Water Polo Due to COVID-19, we could not have a “normal’ water polo season this year. However, when more relaxed regulations allowed for some form of sport, we were determined to make the most of the opportunities afforded us. As a result, training began during the week, and a modified round-robin inter-house league was played on Saturdays. The boys, particularly the seniors, thrived off this opportunity. As they had missed the chance to play sport the previous year and a half, they planned to make the most of this season no matter what it looked like. This attitude was evident in their commitment to practices and inter-house fixtures. It is great to see the camaraderie that comes with team sports. The boys developed strong bonds throughout the season and worked hard to improve their individual skills. As usual, whenever the boys represent their Houses there is tremendous competition and a lot of passion. The level of water polo was good, and this was really encouraging. Finningley held a commanding lead in the Junior section in the first week. However, the determination shown by Water polo Gillingham edged them back in the second week, leaving both Houses on 3 wins and 1 loss. In Week 3, both teams had tough competition against Sheffield and Pembroke, but Gillingham prevailed in the highly-charged final, leaving the top Houses separated only by one goal. While Gillingham ran away with the senior section, a close battle for second place was fought between Finningley and Pembroke. Congratulations to the captain of Gillingham, Matthew Pender-Smith, for lifting The Hall Cup as inter-house winners: Gillingham 1st Finningley 2nd Sheffield 3rd Pembroke 4th Special thanks go to the Sports Department and MIC Water Polo, Mr Savage-Reid, for putting this modified programme in place and ensuring everything ran smoothly. We thank the boys for their enthusiasm and dedication despite the uncertainty and being unable to play the regular inter-school games.
