Chronicle-2021

177 176 The Chronicle 2021 Centenary Edition In the 2021 Kearsney Foundation Annual Report we recognise and honour our donors and sponsors who have so generously contributed to the future of Kearsney College. The full list of donors is available on the Foundation website, kearsney.com/foundation. The Kearsney Foundation aims to bring funds into the College to support the endowment fund for future bursaries and scholarships and future capital expansion. The focus in the lead up to and in the Centenary year has been to establish the Centenary fundraising campaign with the aim to grow the endowment fund and contribute to the funding of the development of the Centenary Academic Centre through the offering of naming rights in the Centre. Centenary Campaign The Foundation’s Centenary Campaign has officially passed the R11 million mark since the start of the campaign in 2016. There is an incredible base of generous donors around the world in the Old Boys, even amidst the pandemic with no face-to face opportunities to raise funds. Fundraising during COVID-19 has been a challenge but, the community has responded to the Centenary call and we have had two of our best fundraising years in 2020 and 2021. The Kearsney College Foundation formally launched the Centenary Arch Appeal in March 2021 and we have been overwhelmed by the success of the campaign. At the time of penning this article, we had surpassed R1,7 million raised. The appeal gives Old Boys and current pupils of the College the opportunity to donate at varying levels and have their name etched onto the boards in the Centenary Arch, leaving their mark at Kearsney. This fundraising campaign is planned to continue into the build up to Founders Week in 2022. Old Boys from around the world have willingly supported this campaign and two year groups, Class of 1981 and 1982, have raised R50 000 each and thus have become Gold donors. Through generous donations made by various benefactors, the Foundation has been able to give 152 boys, from Grades 8 to 12, the opportunity to attend this outstanding school. We bid farewell to 35 Grade 12 boys who have come through our Bursary and Scholarship programme. We truly hope that one day these young men, when Kearsney College Old Boys, will realise the benefit of giving back to the College to give other boys this phenomenal opportunity. Kearsney Development Fund The Kearsney College Foundation would like to extend their gratitude to the Trustees of the Kearsney Development Fund, Messrs Peter Morgan (Chairman), Rob Becker, David Pearse, Ted Garner, Benji Hector, Grant Coppin and Chairman of the Board, Mr Andrew Parsons, who meticulously undertake their fiduciary duties and manage the Kearsney Development investment fund. The Kearsney Development Fund’s largest bequest was received in 2021 from the WH Hulett Trust (KCOB 1925); Sir Liege Hulett was Mr William Hulett’s paternal grandfather and William was a founding pupil of the school. In recognition of Mr William Hulett’s benevolence, the Long Room in the Centenary Centre has been named the Founders Room in his honour. Sir Liege Hulett Award A big thank you to Dr Lawrence Rowley (Head of School, 1975), who supported a Centenary Classroom, in dedication to Mr Clyde Broster, who was a teacher, mentor and friend. Lawrence contributed as a Platinum donor to the Centenary Arch Appeal. For this generous contribution, we are happy to award Lawrence the prestigious Sir Liege Hulett Award. Centenary Fundraising As part of our Centenary celebrations the Kearsney College Foundation increased their fundraising efforts in support of various projects that the College has embarked on, the most significant of which is the development of the new Centenary Centre Centenary Class of 2021 Class Fund Families of the Class of 2021 began the Centenary Class Fund in their Grade 9 year, with the aim of acquiring the naming rights of a Centenary classroom. Through donations from 75 families, the goal of raising R250 000 was achieved by the Class of 2021. The plaque for their classroom was unveiled on 08 October in the Centenary Classroom Block. It was dedicated to the parents of the Class of 2021, who gave the boys the opportunity to attend Kearsney College and leave their legacy. We are sincerely grateful to these donors. Special partnerships with Standard Bank and the Ethelbert Child and Youth Centre One of the Centenary projects identified over 5 years ago was for Kearsney to raise R100 000 for our chosen charity, Ethelbert Child and Youth Care Centre. The Kearsney pupils were each presented an opportunity to contribute towards this fund when they joined Kearsney in their Grade 8 year. This target has successfully been reached with the help of Standard Bank, who partnered with the College by committing to invest funds in this worthwhile project. Kearsney College has had a 67-year association with Ethelbert, and it has been an absolute privilege raising these funds for such a worthy cause. At a special assembly held on 24 March 2021 guests from Ethelbert Child and Youth Centre and Standard Bank joined us for a handover ceremony. The funds were used in the development of their exciting new Early Childhood Development Centre. Halfway Group leaving a legacy at Kearsney The Headmaster's Award is given annually to a senior pupil who most closely embodies the Kearsney ideal of excellence of attitude and character, shown both in and outside the school. Criteria for selection includes a deep love of learning, passion for the College, a high level of participation in school activities, and a commitment to an ethical lifestyle that has been consistently displayed in relationships with both peers and staff. We are delighted that the recipient of this prestigious award this year is Joshua van der Merwe, a highly respected and well-liked young gentleman. Joshua was fostered by Mari and Benny van der Merwe when he was just two months old, and his adoption was formalised in 2016. He displayed remarkable potential as a Grade 7 boy and was awarded a bursary to join Kearsney in 2017 courtesy of Mr George Baikie (Gillingham, 1967) and Halfway Toyota. It has been wonderful to witness Joshua’s growth and development during his time at the College as he grabbed his opportunity and strove to be the best he can be. The Kearsney Foundation congratulates Joshua on receiving the 2021 Headmaster’s Award and thank Halfway for their invaluable support.
