From online teaching back to full-on in-person lessons back to online lessons, to the sudden curtailment of sport, boys and staff alike have had to be prepared to be flexible and “roll with the punches” so to speak. 2021 has nevertheless been a generally happy year for Sheffield House. The atmosphere in the House, generated essentially by a very level-headed, cohesive, and positive matric group, has been a good one. This translated to a greater degree of success than Sheffield has enjoyed in many years in a somewhat truncated interhouse competition. In a sporting competition that did not include squash, golf and rugby, Sheffield placed a credible second. This included a first place in interhouse cross-country, an event that requires mass participation from the House, showing a good, consistent effort from all the boys. Sheffield also placed second in a cultural competition that did not include inter-house music, always a highlight of the year, and chess. With a third place in academics this left the House tie-second with Pembroke, who came first in academics and knocked us into third spot. I am nevertheless proud of all the Sheffield boys for the effort they made this year and for the contributions they made to the House, regardless how big or small. As alluded to earlier, a big part of the success of the House in a turbulent year can be attributed to the matric group of 2021. As a group, the 2021 matrics of Sheffield are a very tightly knit, enthusiastic bunch of young men who led from the front in everything, from the way they conducted themselves in the House and the College, to the massive effort they put into every inter-house competition and their diligence to their studies. I paid tribute to this very special group at the Sheffield Leaver’s Dinner, which was itself a very memorable occasion, for their contributions to Sheffield and the College in their time here and thank them again. Particular thanks must go to my 2021 prefects. Luke, Noah, Bakhe, Nick and Josh have led the House exceptionally well, and I thank them for all the efforts. Other Sheffield prefects served outside the House- Head of School, Rahul Paul, Head of Haley House, Kwazi Moyo, and Haley prefect Jens Otto. We are proud and grateful for their contributions to the College. There was a lot of change to the duty staff of the House this year. Mr Mofokeng, who had replaced Mr Els, left at the end of the first term to take up a post at Bishops and was replaced by Mr Makhathini. At the end of the first term, Mr van Ellewee ended just over 12 years as a duty master in the House and was replaced by Mr Horne until the end of the year. Mr Thomson leaves at the end of this year to go travelling as well, so there has been much change on the staffing front. I would like to thank each of these gentlemen for the time and effort they have put in to assisting with the running of the House as well as their mentorship of the boys. Hopefully 2022 will see a return to some kind of normality and allow the boys of the House and the College to enjoy all that is usually on offer in a year at the College. I am confident that the prefects and matric group of 2022 will step up into their roles as the seniors of the House and lead well next year. Mr Gareth Moerdyk
