Chronicle-2021

59 Centenary Edition Sheffield House Head of House report 2021 has been a year of opposites. Negatives have combined with positives as the boys of the House rallied together to overcome the difficult circumstances presented by the pandemic. The boys came together and put their best foot forward. They gave their all and sacrificed their time and energy for the House. The boys were consistent and prioritised every single event that there was. This was proven when we won the inter-house Cross-Country, a participation-based event that depends on everyone pulling their weight, which showcased their willingness to get involved. The boys also displayed amazing House spirit, always backing their peers until the end. It has been an honour to lead Sheffield House this year and a privilege to watch the boys grow and adapt during such trying circumstances. I believe it is these difficult circumstances which shape our character as a whole and is the very thing that transforms us from Sheffield boys into versatile and self-assured Sheffield men. Leaving the House is one thing that our grade has not been looking forward to. The memories that we have created inside and outside the walls of our home for the past 4 years are ones that we will all remember for life. There are countless memories that the boys will always treasure. Thank you to our Housemaster, Mr Moerdyk, and the duty staff, Mr Thomson, Mr Horne and Mr Makhathini, as well as Mr Mofokeng and Mr van Ellewee for guiding us and instilling us with the Sheffield passion that we all hope to have one day. You have helped shape our Sheffield journey, making it one to remember. I wish you all the best of luck as you continue on your journeys, whether in Sheffield or not. To the prefects of Sheffield House, Bakhe (Dlamini), Josh (van der Merwe), Nick (Kidd), and Noah (Dammann), I thank you for all the support that you’ve given me in helping to lead this House, no matter the circumstances. Our goal was to fill the younger grades with the same passion and love that we had for the House and from what I’ve seen this year, I think it’s safe to say that we’ve achieved that. To the matrics of 2021, I thank you for giving me the opportunity to know what it’s like to have 27 brothers. You’ve made my time at Kearsney undoubtedly the best five years of my life. You supported me throughout the year in every decision I made and, because of you guys, I was able to call Sheffield my home. I wish you boys good luck for the future and can’t wait for our first official Sheffield reunion. To Rhys (Calenborne), Josh (Maskell), Javhar (Naidoo), Adriaan (Smit), Tanna (Pullock) and the Matrics of 2022. Our journey at Sheffield has unfortunately come to an end, but yours at the top is just beginning. You have shown to us and the staff that you have the ability to lead this House next year and to uphold the true meaning of what it means to be a Sheffield boy. If I could leave you with only one piece of advice, it would be to never settle for average, because Sheffield boys weren’t destined for average, we were destined for greatness. I wish you all the best for the future. Luke Robertson
